Doves

REVIEW

Thursday 19th September 2002

The Doves dropped on a little with the weather because when they came out the clouds had gone for good and the sun was beating down so everybody was dry and warm which lifted the spirits.

They started off aptly with 'Catch the sun' and the melodic riffs and driving beats went down well with the Glastonbury crowd. This was followed swiftly by their recent single 'There goes the fear', a fantastic song which didn't really attain the chart position that it deserves. This was then followed by 'Words' and 'Sea song', both very summery songs which felt just right with the sun beaming down. Then they dedicated 'New York' to the late legendary John Entwhistle who had unfortunately passed away in the middle of an American tour with the Who the day before. 'Satellites' was next up followed by their forthcoming single 'Pounding' which was a personal highlight for me as it is one of my favourite songs from their new album and it was performed absolutely spot on. For 'Here it comes' Jez took over the drums but no one dropped a note as the song was performed perfectly and the next song 'The Cedar Room' was also fantastic.

The Doves then surprised everyone by finishing their set with a song from the Sub Sub days, an acid house inspired track from the boy's dance music days, 'Spaceface' which got the pyramid truly rocking as it seemed that everybody was up and dancing.

All in all the Doves were truly inspirational and one of my favourite acts of the weekend. If they carry on like this I don't think it will be long before they are headlining the Pyramid and deservedly so.
