Not really interested in being there, sullen, bored, slightly pissed and looking a bit shabby. A fine description of your writer’s demeanour at this particular point in time, but looking at Amy Winehouse it seems I’m not the only one.
Yes, she has a great voice, but you have to put some effort in surely? Winehouse gave us nothing extra that you wouldn’t get sticking on ‘Back to Black’, and heightened the suspicion that her reputation is built on just 3 songs, her tattoos and that extraordinarily constructed hair. Her inter-song banter is minimal and shambolic.
The 3 songs you know of course. The album’s title track, ‘Rehab’ and ‘You Know I’m No Good’. Naturally, these are saved to the latter stages, so those who left the bar early to stand in the pouring rain were feeling a little frustrated, especially as the precipitation ceased in time the good bits. The early birds were given plenty of filler and a half-assed cover of Lauren Hill’s ‘Do Wop That Thing.
Along with the singles, tremendous songs however they are sung, another cover is a highlight, The Zutons’ ‘Valerie’. A surprise and a delight it’s a fun way for Winehouse to end, but to be honest I’d rather have seen the Liverpool band despite the best effort of the faultless accompaniment, and again, Amy seemed to feel the same.
