PixiesT in the Park2004 reviewWednesday 14th July 2004A band whose name was chosen at random from a dictionary turned out to be one of the most influential and talked about bands of the 1990s. Drugs, arguments and differences lead to the Pixies disappearing from musical culture until this year. Fresh from their UK tour and a performance at MOVE last night, tonight is their first Scottish performance in many years. The crowd has been waiting for hours and today has seen more people with Pixies’ T-Shirts on than any other band’s apparel. Their wait is eased as the band walk out on stage having gained experience and weight even if they’ve lost hair. With this, they launch in to their set. ![]() Playing through their repertoire it becomes obvious where bands like The Smashing Pumpkins based their style – with clear influences coming from the Pixies. The Pixies are a band that influenced a generation and it shows. For the younger crowd that have not previously heard The Pixies, ‘Gauge Away’ (as covered by Papa Roach in 2002) helps the already excited crowd sing along from front-to-back. ![]() If anybody ever wondered what it takes to be a band that are globally respected then look no further. As the set comes to a close, drum sticks and beer cans are used to play a Les Paul as the crowd cheer. It makes you wonder what The Strokes are going to have to offer as the crowd all dissipate leaving the main stage empty. review by Guy Powell photos by Neil Greenway |
