I think with something so stylised, you have to give the positions more than a bit of artistic license.

Thanks for the feedback folks.

That was my line of thinking too Stuart. There was a constant debate in my head around the balance between accuracy & visuals - and some compromises were certainly made.

One of the main challenges is dealing with large land masses who produce (relatively speaking) a lower amount of quality musicians - e.g. Scotland.

Compared to areas like London, Liverpool & Manchester who have churned out a huge amount of influential bands/musicians but are relatively small areas on a map by comparison.

Hopefully I've got the balance about right?

One design compromise I felt at peace with was placing "Rod Stewart" up near Scotland...despite his accent & birthplace ;-)

Why did you put the kooks on there? and why are they in a font more prominent than the likes of the rolling stones and the who?

their inclusion ruins the whole thing.

Because they're famously from Brighton, I guess? They fit in with the whole regional thing.

Famous of "infamous" - depending on your perspective ;-)

I totally get that The Kooks haven't created music of 1/100th of the quality of the Jagger, Richards, Daltrey, Townshend et al.

But as I mentioned one of biggest challenges was dealing with the huge concentration of massive bands/artists who trace their roots back to London (...and its surroundings).

...while also recognising that London is a relatively small land mass in the context of the Britain as a whole.

I took the call to include as many "regional" acts as I could, as close as possible to where that region sits on the map.

I could've very easily swamped the entire illustration with big London acts in big fonts, a smattering of Manc/Liverpudlian acts & a few token Scots and it would've taken half the time...but equally it wouldn't give anywhere near the same flavour of the diversity & depth of British music.

If it throws up a few (x is 3 times the size of y) quirks that's something I'm comfortable with.

By way of comparison...

The design I made for The Music of Ireland was a lot easier to "balance" as there was a more even/natural distribution of talent geographically throughout the country.

TBH I like both "looks" equally.

It's a nice idea but just doesn't quite work. Arctic Monkeys seem to be in Middlesbrough (not Sheffield), Gang of Four in Scarborough (Leeds) and Pulp in Hull (Sheffield). I get that this is because your Manchester takes up all of the north except the East coast but still.

(to be fair I am from Yorkshire, what do you expect if you shift us all out to Filey to make way for Lancastrians? ;) )

It's a cool looking poster but if someone/band doesn't go aesthetically in the right place why not leave them out there are countless others to choose from.

Having someone in the wrong place just doesn't look right.

I think it's jolly good. Nice work sir.

Agreed. :)

Despite being able to pick holes in it, I do recognise that what's included is subjective, and where stuff gets exactly placed comes down to a combination of being space there (difficult for London, for example) and how well they help create the shape of Britain.
