Over 30,000 ventured to Stonehenge to watch the sun rising from the ancient and sacred stones on the Summer Solstice of 2003. Falling on a Saturday morning, many seemed prepared to sacrifice a Friday night, by waiting patiently in the 5 mile long traffic queues to view the sunrise of the longest day of the year.
English Heritage laid on free car parking within walking distance of the stones, although some sun chasers were left outside still queuing, abandoning cars and racing against the clock to see the sunrise of the year. Access to the stones was close up and personal, letting everyone enjoy the event.
Although there was meant to be no climbing onto the stones themselves, once or twice the over-exuberant did climb onto them to cheers from the crowd.
The sunrise itself was stunning, although the first rays of the sun above the horizon were obscured by the early morning haze.
