headliner for Greenbelt announced

Michael Franti and Spearhead for opening night

Greenbelt Festival which happens over the weekend of Friday 22nd to Monday 25th August at Cheltenham Racecourse, Cheltenham have announced the headliner for the opening night.

After headlining the closing night of Greenbelt in 2006, hip hop funky reggae groove masters Michael Franti and Spearhead will be playing the opening night headline slot.

The only other act for the main stage so far confirmed is Martyn Joseph there are two names for the youth humanic 14-17 programme and they are [dweeb] and yfriday.

Greenbelt is an all-age Arts Festival with its roots in the Christian faith and a welcome that's wide and inclusive. It's a place to learn, to experience, to be. It's like nothing else in the world, and that's what keeps thousands of people keep coming back year after year.

Greenbelt whose theme this year is 'Rising Sun' features a great range of music on 5 stages and showcases brand new artists and bands. In addition, the Festival hosts a selection of varied talks, workshop and debates; exploring contemporary issues, faith, social justice, politics ­and more.

Greenbelt has announced the first speakers on the bill who include Salley Vickers, Philip Yancey, Brian McLaren, Frank Schaeffer, Bev Thomas Lucy Winkett, Maggi Dawn, Niall Williams, Stephen Sizer, John Bell, David Dark, Gareth Higgins, Jonathan Kuttab, and Nigel Varndell.

Greenbelt also has a visual and performing arts programme, exploring a variety of alternative worship styles, and runs a daily Children's Festival.
