Peter Gabriel announced for WOMAD

only European performance on Saturday of world music festival

Monday 15th June 2009

Peter Gabriel has been confirmed to appear on the Saturday at world music festival WOMAD.

Peter Gabriel
It will be Peter Gabriel's only European performance following his successful South America tour early this year. Gabriel said of his appearance, "This will be my only show in Europe this year, and I am delighted it will be for Witness.org. I had no plans to play in the UK but when Festival Director, Chris Smith, heard I was looking for a suitable event, he generously offered the Saturday at WOMAD. We are trying to raise £100,000 for Witness."

Gabriel founded Witness in 1992, an organization that uses video to advance human rights. Witness has provided video cameras and training to over 150 groups in 50 countries around the world. Witness helps them use video as evidence before courts, regional commissions and the United Nations, as a tool for public education, and as a deterrent to further abuse. Witness also gives local human rights groups a global voice, by distributing their video to the media and broadcasting it online at www.witness.org.

This year's line-up for the festival, which happens at Charlton Park, near Malmesbury in Wiltshire from Friday 24th to Sunday 26th July, includes Ethiopiques, Solomon Burke joined by his band, Nneka, Dub Colossus, Oumou Sangare, Rokia Traoré, A Filletta, Acetre, Andy White, Ba Cissoko, Besh o droM, The Black Arm Band, Caravan Palace, Darbar Morchang Party, Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan, Enkh Jargal, Etran Finatawa, Hindi Zahra, Mad Professor, Mariem Hassan, Portico Quartet, RSD featuring Joe Peng, Spiro, Victor Démé, and Wang Li.
