Glastonbury Festival goers are 'in it together' with the 3 festival charities

WaterAid, Oxfam and Greenpeace spread the word

Monday 22nd June 2009

Oxfam, Greenpeace and WaterAid are uniting behind the message 'we're in it together' to remind people that joint action can make a big difference at this week's Glastonbury Festival.

With the incredible support of festival goers over the years, the three charities have been helping people out of poverty and fighting against climate change.

Glastonbury Festival continues to raise vital funds for Oxfam, Greenpeace, WaterAid and other good causes, and offers ten of thousands of people the opportunity to take action.

Duncan Wilbur of WaterAid said, "The whole world has been hit by the economic events of the last year, but it is always the very poorest who suffer the most and it is more important than ever that we keep those people in mind and continue our efforts to fight global poverty. Thanks to Glastonbury Festival and its music lovers, we have been able to spread the message far and wide and we want to let people know that they are making a difference to those in poverty, and to keep it up. Keep showing Worthy Farm the love and Leave no Trace! Thank you for not peeing in the stream, thank you for taking your tent and pegs home, thank you for not dropping litter and most of all thank you for coming."

At the two Oxfam clothing stalls at the Festival have received a high fashion makeover from stylist to the stars Mrs Jones. Shoppers themselves will also be given the celebrity treatment. Mrs. Jones and a team of Oxfam stylists will offer a re-styling service to shoppers - giving them a hot new festival look or styling them to look like the band of their choice.

Oxfam campaigners will be painting festival-goers' faces blue as part of a visual climate change petition - Jarvis Cocker, Little Boots and Fat Boy Slim, Luke from the Kooks, The View, VV Brown, Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly and Tom from Editors have already signed up. Oxfam will use the photo-petition of blue faces to put pressure on the UK government to push for a good deal at the climate change conference in Copenhagen this year. The deal must keep CO2 emissions to a safe level and be fair to those already affected by climate change.

Greenpeace will be offering festival goers the opportunity to become joint owners of our 'airplot' - the land they have bought where the government wants to build Heathrow's phenomenally unpopular third runway. Free real estate, available at Greenpeace International Airport, at the entrance to the Green Fields. They have built our own runway, departure lounge and out-of-c ontrol tower, plus the charity provides free solar power showers, an edible garden, carbon dating and, for those who really must get airborne, the FSC skate ramp and climbing wall.

The Wateraid latrines
WaterAid will be asking music fans to sign up to a petition asking Gordon Brown to talk taps and toilets at the upcoming G8. As the building blocks of development, water and sanitation need to be given a higher priority - festival goers can see their 'it's child's play' building blocks at the WaterAid stand near the Pyramid stage. The ladies urinals, the 'She Pees' are back, as are the Wateraid latrines in Kings Meadow, all manned by WaterAid volunteers, who will be spreading the loo love among festival goers all weekend. WaterAid asks festival goers not to pee in the stream, and please respect the toilets by leaving them as you'd wish to find them.

eFestivals supports WaterAid and gives around 1% of our turnover (turnover, not profit) to them each year.

The line-up of music acts for this year has been confirmed and includes Neil Young as Friday headliner, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band as Saturday night headliner, and Blur as Sunday headliner, alongside thousands of other acts including The Specials, Lily Allen, Fleet Foxes, Kasabian, Crosby Stills and Nash, Dizzee Rascal, Spinal Tap, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Madness, Bloc Party, The Ting Tings, Lady GaGa, White Lies, Franz Ferdinand, Pendulum, Maximo Park, Paolo Nutini, Peter Doherty, The Prodigy, Glasvegas, Bon Iver, Bat For Lashes, Q-Tip, and many more.
