Glastonbury Festival 1999

Friday 25th to Sunday 27th June 1999
Worthy Farm, Pilton, nr Glastonbury, Somerset, England
£83

One of the most telling descriptions I read of last year's festival was that it was Glastonbury with the Glastonbury taken out! So this year was Glastonbury with all its Glastonbury in it! Have you come home to folks asking you who you saw, and who you missed? Or whether you were practically on stage or stood hundreds of yards back? Or whether your tent was rifled or stolen? It's a strange feeling, isn't it, like they're all the wrong questions. In a way we were the gig, and it was all gig!

For me the high spots, musically at least, were Black Star Liner (with their driving global groove, strange menace, outrageous showmanship and mischievous humour), Yothu Yindi (for creative use of sunblock and fighting for the Aboriginal) and Mercury Rev (because I've wanted to see them for ages and would have paid the 85 quid just for that!)
