Glastonbury Festival 1999

Friday 25th to Sunday 27th June 1999
Worthy Farm, Pilton, nr Glastonbury, Somerset, England
£83

This being my third Glastonbury Festival I thought my friends and I were prepared to enjoy this wonderful event. Unfortunately, in the early morning hours of Thursday a bunch of knife weilding, fish-n-chip eating, soccer-like hooligans invaded our campsite. Tents were slashed, money stolen, and this beautiful event suddenly turned quite ugly. Fortunately no one was hurt in this particular incident.

As one of my robbed friends said, "They can steal our money but they can't steal the spirit of Glastonbury."

With that in mind we all chipped in and supported our friends throughout the rest of the festival and had a great time. There were some very memorable performances including; Glenn Tillbrook doing an "all request" set Saturday night in the Acoustic Tent, Joe Strummer's rip snorting diatribe against the BBC and cameras in general on the Main Stage on Saturday afternoon, and R.E.M.'s brilliant show on Friday night. Other highlights included Donal Lunny's Coolfin, Patti Smith, Bare Naked Ladies, and the Jazz Stage performances of AfroCelt Sound System and Burning Spear.

We all agreed we'd like to come back to another Glastonbury Festival. If the police presence isn't beefed up and the assholes are allowed to roam freely around the site ripping people off, we are left no alternative other than coming back armed ourselves.

If any of the Glastonbury thieves can read, heed this warning.

The next time you slash into a tent occupied by any of us you may feel the hammer of the gods on your drug addled empty heads. I for one look forward to the hollow sound that this clash of hardened steel and skull will make -- GONG!!!
