Having just celebrated my 40th birthday, my 20 year old neice Claire and I headed off for our 3rd Glasto in a row and my 5th - (not counting 2 in the 80's in the "good old days"). Expectations were high - last year's hot weather and great line-up took alot to beat. Arriving on Wednesday, with Claire stocked up on antibiotics having gone down with tonsillitis the day before, we found we couldn't camp in our usual place without a child in tow. Still, safely encamped we wrapped up warm against the cold and windy weather and meandered about - the wellies only came out on Thursday night.
Our local Dorset band Pronghorn playing in the Firestarter stage in the Fringe livened things up and wandering around we bumped into a friend in the Greenfields. Glasto before everyone arrives is a great atmosphere.Once the crowds arrive it's not quite the same.
Key thoughts from 2000:
-
How come everyone camped around us got in for free? - we paid
- 12 of
them didn't - no wonder no-one could get in the Other stage field to see
Moby on Friday! Once the kids see how easy it is they are never gonna pay
again. - The toilets were better this year
- Far too many people on Saturday
- Great to just about see the Waterboys from the back of the Acoustic tent - brought back memories of 1986 (Claire stayed for Nine Inch Nails)
- Where was Billy Bragg this year and why did I not get up in time to see John Martyn? [he didn't either - ed!]
- Where were the "big name bands" - it really needed Radiohead or someone.
- We never got anything nicked even thought the tent next to us disappeared one day - although we did have a group of drug dealers camping opposite.
- Funniest sight: - everyone walking around with mobile phones - no one getting lost anymore - e.g "I'm by the Pyramid Stage on the left - wave at me so I can see you " - this in a field of 100, 000!!!!
- Travis - great but too new to be headlining Glasto??
- Bowie was brilliant - worth staying for- even Claire who only wanted to see Nine Inch Nails was impressed!! - and we got out the car park in 10 mins and was home in Bournemouth by 2.15am!
Too old to go next year ? We'll see!!!!
