Kelis
Dance Tent
20:30 Sunday 25th June 2000
Kelis played at around 8.30 Sunday in the Dance Tent. As is the american style this was a very professional and staged show that left nothing to chance.
Before she came on her three backing singers and MC got the crowd calling for her in a big build up to what was to be an excellent rocking set. Kelis joined her crew on stage wearing white trousers split to the thigh at the sides, white crop top saying Blondie, silver belt and a scarf to keep her wayward green/blue hair off her face - the music was heavy, thumping and loud - good entrance.
For the third track she was joined by her MC for the gently rocking 'Mafia' which got a big applause and by the forth song, 'Ghetto Children' which was pretty funky, hands were waving in the air. 'I Want Your Love' was another from her album which went down very well. This was a show full energy and the sound could be described as funky metal with her two female guitarists providing more guitar riffs than you'd expect to come across in the Dance tent. The backing singers were loud but Kelis was louder, she was belting them out in that husky style of her own and had loads of confidence. This confidence showed when she covered 'Born To Be Wild' in excellent harmony with her backing singers and just bass guitar and drums - heavy stuff.'Caught Out There' followed at a faster pace (perhaps she's getting sick of it but knew it had to be included) and inevitably had the crowd jumping.
Kelis played to the crowd and got them shouting and cheering, she was slick and professional and they would have wanted her back anyway but the MC was there to make sure. He had everyone jumping up and down before she came back on to sing her current single 'Good Stuff' and then to finish she did a very decent job of 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' which had us all screaming along before she left. Kelis - she rocked!
