Morcheeba are a strange band so many people are unaware of their name, yet when presented with their music invariably say "oh . I know this - I love it". Even so, when Skye Edwards called out "I can't see you", the lighting man took the hint, and threw some light on the crowd. Now laughing in disbelief she said "We thought you'd all go to see Travis". She was so wrong!
With the new album "Fragments of Freedom" out next month, I'd expected their set to be unfamiliar, but it was great to hear the old favourites live again ( Friction, Trigger Hippy, Part of the Process, Tape Loop, The Sea) performed with their usual excellence. What did surprise me was the reaction to their new songs - the crowd reacting stronger to those than the oldies. Having only performed the new songs live once before (at Hanover Grand, London on 19th June - read the review here) the reaction boosted their confidence, and their nerves subsided.
The crowd soaked up the smooth voice and the mellow tones, while the band put full effort into ensuring the perfect delivery of every note.
Skye:
"Are you coming up on your drugs yet?"
Who needs drugs? The hit from their performance was the greatest
high of the weekend.
Following their disappearance from the stage, the crowd shouted, screamed and stomped for more. One look at my watch told me that was it. Shame - I would have stayed there forever.
With them appearing at other festivals this summer, I'm off to get my tickets.
