After the mellow sounds of Eddie Reader, the crowd was ready to be energised and this task fell to The Blockheads. They came on to the stage with as much energy as ever and launched into numerous of their old and new songs. Without Ian Dury it did feel a bit strange, but the band played on. They didn't try to replace Dury or imitate him, they simply got on with it and produced a storming set. They included in their set the last song that they'd written with Dury, though he'd never had the opportunity to play it. This was said in a non-emotive fashion and the band played the tune with great vivacity.
The crowd - who had been lying on the ground enjoying the sunshine gradually got to their feet and started dancing. By the time they played 'Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll' the place was positively jumping. Our four year old, who's top tune is 'Mash it up Harry' (not played here unfortunately) was dancing crazily, as were the majority of the diverse crowd. There was young and old enjoying this set which was played with some finesse.
Ian Dury would have been proud.
