Late Night Entertainment at Leeds Festival

Thursday 25th August
The festival starts early at Bramham Park as Thursday night sees the Comedy and Cabaret Stage provide cabaret, live music, cult films and Dj’s and visuals to get in the mood for the weekend.

Buzzard Buzzard will be providing the visuals and DJ Rita and Philski will be opening events with a journey through the world of heavy metal, from classics to the best new tunes whilst Timothy of London will add some class as your MC.

Freaks Union have toured with Rancid amongst others and the Hull street punks are sure to provide a fiery start to the live music for the weekend.

This Girl have already been heralded by the likes of Kerrang as one of the most important UK bands of recent years. With second album, “Uno”, one of the highlights of 2004, This Girl are a genuinely independent band and a great way to keep the tent moving on Thursday.

Chris Cunningham’s “Rubber Johnny” has been acclaimed across the artistic world. The hero, a shape shifting mutant child, is locked in a basement with only his terrified dog for company. With a soundtrack from Aphex Twin this is, by turns, dark, emotional and demented.

Metallica’s “Some Kind Of Monster” is a brave move from one of the world’s biggest bands. Allowing cameras to track the progress of recording of their “St. Anger” album, the film is a warts and all profile of a band on the verge of disintegration and reveals the people behind the image. If you haven’t seen this film and consider yourself a music fan then you should be in the tent on Thursday night.

Friday 26th August
Manga films have developed from cult status to some of the most highly regarded animation in the world. “Dead Leaves”, the tale of two human clones imprisoned in a facility on the moon known as “Dead Leaves” displayed a new and uncharted world of animation that has influenced many graphic artists ever since.

Dirty Sanchez are back and promising a new show to top their near legendary exploits with sandpaper and nails two years ago. The show is under wraps at present but one thing is for sure, it will be messy, it will be funny and, for some, it will be time to put your hands in front of your eyes. It may look good on MTV but seeing it in the flesh is a whole new experience.

The Cuban Brothers can rightly claim to be one of the most entertaining acts in the world today. Melding music with comedy both physical and observational and sensational dancing, the brothers are always guaranteed to bring the house down wherever they go. Having hosted the NME Awards and the MTV Music Awards the boys know how to keep a crowd happy. Were further proof needed, their storming set on the main stage at Manumission in Ibiza is now the stuff of legend and anyone who knows about Manumission will know that is no easy thing. The perfect people for a party, get down with the Cuban Brothers at this year’s event.

Warp Records are responsible for some of the landmark moments in both British music and British film. Aphex Twin’s “Squarepusher” and “Come To Daddy” and their attendant Chris Cunningham videos created a new approach to the music video. So, it is with great pleasure that we welcome Warpvision to the festival with both those films and many more to entertain and delight into the night.

Saturday 27th August
Manga return with one of their finest. “Blood: The Last Vampire” blends the reality of a US military on the brink of entering the Vietnam war with a vampire infested Japanese airforce base to create a bizarre pseudo super hero story with a crack vampire hunter on their tale. Considered by James Cameron (“Titanic”, “Terminator”) to have opened a new era in digital animation, this is one of Manga’s finest moments.

Saul Williams takes a stroll from the Carling Stage to entertain at late night with a radically different set. As Saul is a poet in addition to a musician many things are possible but, as yet, he is remaining tight lipped about his plans for this special show. This late night set has the feel of ‘festival highlight’ written all over it.

Type2error are the people behind the live visuals for the likes of Hope of The States and videos for Bloc Party and The Rakes amongst others. Tonight, they will be showing some of those videos with a DJ set and live visuals in addition for good measure. Alongside Youth Movie Soundtrack Strategies and members of Hope of the States, Redjetson, The Edmund Fitzgerald and 65daysofstatic to create “error in movies”, a unique music and visual collaboration.

With Dinosuar Jr and Foo Fighters on the bill this year it seems somehow appropriate that those who are light on the history of these bands should have a chance to watch “1991 – The Year That Punk Broke”. The quintessential ‘grunge’ film, the film follows Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr and Babes In Toyland on a long tour through Europe as some hit superstardom. A reminder of the brilliance of those bands and the excitement of the times, this is another must see music film.

Sunday 28th August
Leeds says goodbye for another year with one last piece of Manga genius. “X” tells the story of the cosmic battle between Dragons of Heaven, protectors of the earth, and the Dragons of Earth, determined to bring about the devastation of the planet for its purification. Stylish, dark, gothic and incredibly visual, this is yet more genius from the Japanese anime geniuses.
