r.i.p maff

today was yet another sad day as i and a whole church full said goodbye to a freind Matthew was stabbed a few weeks ago and died on the way to hospital to be pronounce dead on landing. only hours earlier he had been in my shop chatting and happy, rubbing my head and calling me a good un, we smiled at each other and did the old handshake. it is a fond memory that is spoilt by the fact that the "alledged" stabber was in the shop with us at the time, his face i will never forget. maff was a s

system upgrades to servers

I've spent most of today updating the system software on the eFestivals servers (which explains why they've gone off-line occasionally today, if you were wondering), and despite my novice knowledge of linux they've all gone exceedingly well. The newer server is all completed, but there's still some stuff to do for the older one. Because its an older installation and hadn't been updated before (whoops ) there's still a little more to do... Back to it.

Endorse it.

And so it starts again, after talking to Jacketspud and 5co771e at Ssh we decided that next year was going to consist of Endorse it and BD's and camping in between. Well early bird reduced rate tickets have just gone on sale for the former and if I can get in touch with Lisa I think tickets will be bought, 65 quid is not to be sniffed at. A very good price for a festival in this day and age when organisers are happy to attach a hundred pound price tag.

Religion a potted history

'Ancient' religions tended to be more based on science - witnessing and celebrating the changes of the seasons and the forces at work in nature - they didn't have science to explain this but gave the forces at work arhetypes. Many of the old religions also took into account the human condition - using archetypes to explain personality traits - loving, violent, mad, forgiving, optimistic, sanguine, introverted etc. In those days there was no school of psychology. These were described as frequenci

burning down the house

I was charging a high powered rechargeable battery for one of my boys toys on Sunday morning, when it exploded - proper fireballs (several!) and everything. Because it went up with such a bang, straightaway it was a biggish fire (18 inches across i guess), and it set light to my toy (), and things nearby (books, chest of draws, placcy bags of stuff, etc). If I hadn't been in the room at the time, within seconds it would have taken proper hold, and I'd now have no house. Very luckily I was, a

Ordered a bow and more evidence

Just got chatting to the country's master bowyer - and he says he'll make me a custom bow! Cos I'm tall with long arms it'll have a 30" draw - and will be made from yew and hickory! Plus it's half the price of usual bows of this spec. Secondly, happened to be checking on the 'traditionalness' of this bow when i found this: While the English used the Longbow, Keltic archers were pictured and described using shorter, gently recurved Flatbows. Below is a hunting scene showing 16th century Sco

Going Green?

Waveform, being the ecologically green festival that it is raises some interesting questions which as an attendee I find myself wondering about. The biggest concerns the actual peace ceremony at the heart of the festival. Billed as an Earthdance it actually consisted of a poem read by a hippy woman which I personally felt failed to connect with the majority of the crowd. The wording seemed too couched in hippydom to be taken seriously. This raises a wider question, dance music has been aro

Wavefore excels

Considering the last 'beep beep' festival I went to was overloaded with chavs and zombied trancers and Ket heads and seemed to involve wall to wall advertising, I've tended to shy away from them since the glory days of the late Eighties and early nineties and yet here is Waveform to re-affirm my faith in dance festivals - well done Family Gathering youknow how to do your festivals. Okay so the line up boasted some great old school names Banco De Gaia, Eat Static, System 7 and the real Ozrics (Dr

Formula One: Getting out of hand

McLaren to be fined $100m (yes, thats $100,000,000) and kicked out of the constructors championship. And would have been kicked out completely for this year and next had Max got his way. I don't know who to be mad at most. Coughlan, Pedro and Alonso for being such idiots about communicating all of this clearly confidential information, or Max and the FIA for insiting on ruining one of the most exciting seasons for years for McLaren essentially doing what every team does every year. It infu

my wonderful secretary

I have - apparently - a wonderful secretary, who calls festival organisers to arrange access for eFestivals staff. This is the latest scam being tried by some to blag their way into festivals. Are people really so stupid to think that something like this will work? The answer of course is yes . Does it work? Nope - and these people aren't even clever enough to cover their tracks. Scammers are always a few sandwiches short of the full hamper.

signs of the summer

So this year the bubble has well and truly burst. Alongside the new festivals that failed to get off the ground there were also some established names that failed completely or suffered from lower sales. Meanwhile, the better festivals held their own or grew as they were hoping to do. So what happens when Mean Fiddler's Festival Republic's Melvin Benn gets asked about the trends this summer? He doesn't pick on the festivals that suffered, but instead comments that he's heard that sales were d

Award Winning

This weekend was expensive - firstly we tooled up the Mrs with a mid-range bow plus accessories and I bought a dozen - heavier weight 32" (45-55lb) arrows. Quicks must have been glad to see us. Then it was the club championships. And we all walked away with silverware. I got the best barebow score 331 and Z came second in the juniors. K got third in novices. Z also got a trophy for the Junior League (another second) and I won the league for Short Windsor (that's shooting 50 and then 40 yards)

Dying To Be....

So basically i had this nice lil idea that what with being bored of purple hair i'd go brown/black but leave a chunk of purple. So i redyed the pinky purple bit, then applies what i thought was dark brown hair dye to the rest of my hair. Fast forward to an hour later...and low and behold...my hair is GINGER. Yes muggins here didn't realise that "Auburn" was a shade of well..ginger.... So i had a mad panic..i'd used all of the pink/purple hair dye and all i could find was blue and turquois

Love Is Only a Feeling....

grrrrr i think i'm coming to termns with being single basically its taken me a few months but i've learnt that men...are twats. especially if you make the stupid mistake of sleeping with them. i forgot that men after you've had sex with them tend to not want to have anyhthing to do with you, which makes things arkward. its my own silly fault but i just keep letting myself get used. i think i partly went to leeds with some naive fantasy that i'd meet someone. thats not what happened. i just

Shambala festival

My weekend was fun, to say the least. Thursday we left to go to Shambala in the wilds of Northamptonshire/Leicestershire border. The drive down was effortless but I was a little riled that there wasn't any signs for the festival at all and I considered this poor on the part of the organisers. So we roll up at the gate and there a re a few people milling about so we know that we are going to get a good spot for the tent. We head to the wristband exchange and it is at this point that we are inform

Shhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Back from Shhhh - once again the most fun I've had in a field all summer - loads of workshops (most craft stuff I've seen since Glasto) loads of extra stuff to get involved in like jousting, gurning, tug of war, football, political issues, - and loads more. Mead, ciders like Hecks (Hex) a whole perry pub, great performances (although the music took a back seat), lovely location woodland was great with lights, visuals, glitterballs, hammocks etc. Lots of bands i liked from Glasto new bands' final

life and that

Really REALLY trying to get myself into the mood for leeds fest this weekend, its not happening at all. First year ive ever felt like this to be honest. I think its because of a numberous of reasons. The ticket mess up ive had really pissed me off. The whole confusion on tickets this year has been a complete shambles. Also there really isnt many bands i can get excited about. Of course TSP (why when i write that do think of 'tablespoon' lmaooo) and NIN, also gogol bordello (who i saw at glasto a

Jazz hands

Found a great excuse for carrying a tankard at festivals - it's for medicinal reasons. Getting hot here tonight (10.40pm) so looking good for this weekend hopefully. Might not even need the BBQ - hoe they have good food like the furnace there. Will be wearing same costume too - been told this is boring - but hey can't afford loads of stuff. Work is totally nuts another graphics guy has walked so there's now 4 of us doing 78 magazines. That's 20 a month each - not enough hours in the day. Plus sp
