  1. Sickening way to lose, brings back memories of England in Euro 2016, although don't think this tournament will have a happy ending like that one! Looks to me one tournament too far for Bale and Ramsey, glad they at least got one world cup in.
  2. I think people remember England v Netherlands, England v Germany and forget the dross. I went to Holland v France (qf) Holland v Czech (semi) both 0-0 penalties!
  3. I think the performances at this stage are pretty irrelevant, it's just about getting through the group and hoping for some good fortune in the knockouts. I still fancy France, despite missing so many players they still have a strong squad. A fresh Griezman could be an important player.
  4. I think it was that game they left the game for a report from the England training ground. I mean I'm Welsh, but I have zero interest in the training ground!
  5. I personally don't agree with VAR. I am going on my unreliable memory, but I am sure one of the disallowed goals was very marginal and I don't think football is better fo disallowing these kinds of goals. In general I agree about the time wasting. The only flaw (no way around it) is the team wasting time can benefit by having more time to get a goal back of the time wasting fails and opposition scores.
  6. Also think pre var and Argentina could be 3-0 up at half time, maybe end up winning by 4 or 5 and people saying how good the look, very small margins.
  7. I seem to remember WC 90 and euro 96 had low goals per games and the media narrative is they were amazing tournaments. Euro 96 in particularly really stunk!
  8. I would probably have to look at it in more depth. As you say having a poor start means no margin for error, but I at the same time I am not convinced the standout teams in the group are the eventual winners. I think some teams peak too early, while some winners gradually improve as the tournament advances
  9. Do you think being a stand out team in the first game matters? Look at 2 of the last 3 winners. Spain lost their first game and France laboured to a win against Australia.
  10. I think they have also had a bit of bad luck. In the last 3 tournaments they have always been in the same half of draw as the eventual winner.
  11. It seems Belgium have peaked. You look at the last 3 tournament and they should have at least made a final.
  12. I feel people are underestimating Iran. I see Wales, USA and Iran at a similar level and think all the games between the 3 will be tight.
  13. Mad challenge as Wales just didn't look like scoring, but over the 90 minutes a fair result. Neither team created much and I am pretty certain whoever goes through from this group with England, will be sent packing the next round. From my perspective I didn't have much expectation going into the tournament so anything is a bonus. To score a goal is another thing ticked off the list.
  14. Wales very poor in the first half. Lacking in ideas without Joe Allen in midfield. Need big improvement in second half
  15. To me Lineker is a huge waste of taxpayers money. I don't feel strongly one way or another about him as a presenter, but if you paid someone else half the money, the ratings for BBC matches wouldn't change one bit. I would have huge respect for him if he refused to present our of principle and gave up his salary, but like others will only make a token stand.
  16. The players care, but not enough to do something that can inconvenience from a sporting perspective.. Those in the media care but not enough to turn down the cash or opportunity to raise their profile. Fans care, but not enough to boycott sponsors or make sacrifices in watching football matches. Ultimately it's why little will change because not enough are willing to sacrifice anything.
  17. I think RLB was so bad even Corbyn supporters struggled.
  18. It's right to call it out, but ultimately very few (including me) are willing to make a real stand such as boycotting games or sponsors. There is also a level of hypocrisy where people making the criticism are fine using phones or wearing clothes produced by cheap labour in poor working conditions. Ultimately people being hypocrites is not a new thing in football.
  19. Surely it's possible to praise him for doing something good, but still call out his hypocrisy about Qatar. The concerns to me (like the last world cup) is people will talk about how bad things are, but nothing really changes. In general for all the criticism of Qatar, players, media and fans are unwilling to make a stand against it by boycotting the thing. I get the impression a lot of the discussion is people trying to justify to themselves their own personal decisions.
  20. As with these discussions how many are willing to turn the money down and make a true stand where they could still have the discussion. I would have huge respect for anyone taking that stand, but they are all taking the bullshit Neville response of using the platform to highlight concerns.
  21. Does what they are doing really take much spine. To me it's the equivalent of the man u yellow and green scarf protest. It's ticking a box that you have shown some level of protest, without really protesting.
  22. I have to admit this is the first time I have seen them, but surprised they are Asian champions.
  23. They could not take a salary, refuse to be on the presentation team and still express their personal opinion.
  24. I thought France and Belgium were quite a bit ahead of everyone in that world cup. I think even England or Croatia winning would have been quite a big surprise.
  25. BBC international coverage has really gone downhill in recent years and now comfortably overtaken by ITV. The Lineker/Shearer combo has got very stale and both clearly know very little about anything outside the premier league/champions league nor have bothered to do much research. Favourite Lineker quote today was if you are good enough to reach the quarter finals, you can win the whole thing. I would argue Russia, Uruguay and Sweden had close to zero chance of winning the last world cup
