While I don't disagree, that's still different to saying people do it wholly to spot themselves on telly. Expressing solidarity isn't a selfish act.
Edit: Or if people think it is that's more about their own cynicism. I'd cite all the Palestinian flags at Radiohead and the Tibetan flags at the Dalai Lama as examples of more than just "Look at me!" flagwaving.
