Thought Id ressurect this thread with a little story...

Needed to go and take some pics of lake windermere in the lake district as a present for my mates engagement (the proposed on one of the piers). Checked the weather forcast for Sunday just gone and all was supposed to be fine, sunny with light clouds. Thought that would have been perfect for a sunrise picture with the sun shining through the clouds onto the lake. So i dusted off the SLR the night before and charged the battery etc, got up at 6.30 in the morning, got up there for 7.30 in the ice and snow, setup in the dark and what happened... clouds closed in, rain started and everything stayed black for the next 1 1/2hrs. Didnt even get to see sunrise as the clouds were so think. Anyway eventually I managed to get some shots and out of the 200+ I took i got about 3 pretty good ones. Once Ive cleaned em up il post on here anyway.

has anybody else got any photo taking tales of woe??

just upgraded to a Nikon D90 from a D40. loving it. a whole new world of possibilities with the High ISO (except for the fact that it pretty much only compensates for the faster shutter requirements and lower light of high magnification associated with the 1:1 macro lens.

started to fall fowl of the problems of directional lighting and Chromatic Abberation on fine detail so might have to get some light reflectors or something. either that or fit the sun with a diffuser :P (anyone else shoot naturally lit macro and have issues with this/have a good solution? )

also looking into proper macro studio set-up and going to get some bellows and an RMS lens mount. found some forums on the subject and it looks easier than I thought. played around with reversing my 18-55mm kit lens(hand held on the front of the camera :P) and can get about 3x magnification. so going to get a reversing ring and have a play. also going to get some darkroom enlarging lenses and try them too :P

also, just for the hell of it, I've just bought a 35mm Sokol2 rangefinder. has anybody used and developed slide film? Thinking about Velvia or x-pro and specifically thinking about cross processing. I don't have the kit to do this myself and looking for a reliable place to send things too or preferably a good processing place in the surrey/sussex/hampshire region. guess this is the wrong place to ask but I thought I'd try, might also find any festival people that are thinking about torturing themselves by attempting to use film :P

(I'm a total digital convert, whining about the benefits of a stop or two dynamic range or the supposed extra resolution is boring and not really relevant to 99.9% of situations), I love the look of cross-processed slide film taken on shaky old cameras. got quite a fun lomo emulator for the iphone and wanted to see what the real thing was like. I think I'll get bored quickly though :P

posted the above link in reply to someone wanting advice on edits on another thread and thought would be ok for on here too. He is a friend of mine who imo produces some fantastic shots, with minimum editing. Feel free to take a look (if the link works...i`m not sure how Flickr workes)

Can anyone give me a bit of advice on what camera I should go for?

We've lost our old digital camera so are going to buy a new one. We'd had our other one for 6 years so it was time to update anyway. I'm after a compact rather than a DSLR. The only thing that's a true must is the ability to take fast shots as our old one used to take 4-5 seconds before taking a picture. I'd also like a decent zoom, and preferably something that would take good night-time photo's. We're looking to spend up to about £250. I've read a few reviews of the panasonic TZ-10 which sounds pretty good but wondering if any of you have any opinions on it or other suggestions.

Thanks :)

Thanks Den, really am out of my depth here. Having read some reviews i'm getting tempted by the fujifilm f70exr. Not stupidly expensive but with lots of features. I do like gadgets so it should give me enough features to play with. Anyone got one? I'll see if I can try one out this weekend somewhere.

I should have known---yer a bloke aren`t yer. You`ll never use Aperture Priority over Shutter Priority and you will never touch the ISO dial and the Exposure Bracketing will be mostly redundant... BUT ---you will baffle your lass by reading all the features out and what they can do...and your knob will begin twitchin when you see the huge list of the cameras capabilities..... but your pictures will still be of kids, dogs and the pair of you drinking or eating ice-cream...eeeee lad, I`m wasting me f**kin time....
