That's me up to 10 miles, 7 weeks before my first half marathon.

All the training so far is pointing towards a race time of between 2 hour and 2 hours 10 but hopefully that will improve. Feeling confident about doing the distance though.

If you're doing that far now, you'll have no probs with a half marathon

I have changed my training style and gone back to a more military approach. I did a 8mile walk carrying a 50 pound pack, and managed it in just over 2 hours. Running has been taking its toll on my shins for some reason.

I have entered the Manchester 10km Run in May for something to aim at.

On a plus I now only weigh 16 stone, and I have lost 2 stone in just over 6 weeks :O

Bloody hell, I want some of whatever you're having! Well done!

Went to the gym for a walk/cycle/cross-trainer and second part of 10k training for this week, which was run 7, walk 2 x 2. Sounds like nothing but I'm gonna trust that the plan works eventually! I've done some running outside (coming back from the gym) but my shins and ankles are not fans of concrete so will wait til I get stronger (and my mum starts running again in Feb) to pick that back up again.

Also did Pump and Combat this week and hoping the cross-training will help me out in the running stakes. I'm in awe of all you people running 5 miles plus... One day I'll get there!

Some great tips on this thread for people starting out, gonna be keeping my eye on it :)

run 7, walk 2 x 2

I've recently taken up running and this is kinda where I'm at at the moment (in relation to the route I run and how long it takes me and the amount of running time). I don't really need to lose weight;, more get rid of the beer belly that's been developing over the past couple of years, but I am quite unfit and although I find it hard even to do this at the moment I can already feel the benefits and have knocked off a minute off my route already. (Plan to increase the distance I run at the start of next week to move onto the next level)

+1, I hope to get there by the end of March :D

In addition to running I've also decided that another way to get fit, as well as being a cheap way to fill my spare time as I'm a student bum who never studies and only works part time, is to take up hillwalking. A bit more interesting than running, is a great workout and the views once you reach the top are such an amazing reward for your effort. Hoping to maybe climb 2-4 hills a month as well as a decent walk every week (8-12 miles).

I hoping that by the start of the summer I'm back up to the kind of fitness levels I had when I was 21/22!

*EDIT - My fitness levels weren't incredible at this age but at least I could play a game of football or run for a few miles at a time without blowing out my arse after 2 minutes! :):O:D

Cor, don't we all. :)

Failing that, the last time I ran for 1.5 hours non-stop was in 2001, which is where the half-marathon in 5 weeks comes in. Except I'll be flabbered if I can do that in less than 2 hours.

I'm only 26 so hoping all is not lost! :)

I'm hoping that if I can get back to decent standard by the end of March (I used to run when I was at school) then I can look at applying for a race, possibly a 10k but maybe a half marathon :P

I ran/walked my first (and only, thus far!) 5k with my Mum in 35 minutes...We trained on and off for a couple of months beforehand but that was as someone who was rather overweight and had done NO running before! I lost 2 stone in the run up to the 5k but really let it slip once I'd finished and had no goal to train towards.

I've spent this weekend re-reading my Running Made Easy book. I'm feeling super-motivated at the moment and have begun their 10K plan today (on the treadmill though...and then running home from the gym!). I got a text earlier suggesting the Great North Run in October, so am looking to do a 10K in a few months as something to work towards in the meantime. I know you can train much faster for races but my work schedule is chaotic too. It's 10 weeks but I'm trying to slot in some Pump and Combat classes too along the way... At the moment I can run (and I use that in the loosest sense - it's a slow jog!) for up to 10 minutes before having to break, although the plan has reset that to 5 minutes to start with. We'll see how it works out... :)

If you want a online-training-buddy, I'll volunteer my services - I need all the motivation I can get!

Just saw this now! I too need as much motivation as possible!

The thing thats driving me mad right now is the weather, every time i plan a run il get out of bed and see torrential rain! bring on the summer runs, get fit and getting a tan :)

Is the book good? I deffo need some kind of plan to follow. Im going to go join a gym 2moro on a pay as you go type basis, so I have no excuse of not running when the weather is bad. I love running on a treadmill too.

I like the book a lot but probably because I'm still a beginner and it is very motivating and interactive - loads of space to keep notes of workouts and runs and how you felt and measurements and heart rate and all sorts! I don't use all of them but it does make you think about how you feel before, during and after, and how that was different to yesterday and what you need to work on. Their plan is based on 60 seconds of running and walking, then building up...So you can pick your starting point and work up, or go back a few steps if you're struggling. It's great being able to tick a week off and go Yay, I ran all that!

Seasoned runners might find there's nothing in there that's new to them though.

And sign up to Runners World website (it's free, but some of the material is only accessible to subscribers of the magazine) - the forums have loads of tips on, whatever stage you're at :) They also have 5k, 10k, half and full marathon plans as well I think, which aren't dissimilar from the Running Made Easy ones.

fras, I think we should find something local that we can aim to do in march or something, give us both something to work towards, and if im doing it with someone else i know il have to stick to it!!

That book sounds good... im very much a note taker so the interactive element of it sounds like my kinda thing, might have a look on amazon! and im deffo a newbie runner so its sounds perfect for me!!

shall have a look on that site too, thanks.

I did Dartford 10 mile yesterday. Was disappointed with my time (1.25) as i was aiming for 1.20, but on reflection it was probably due to taking off 4 weeks from running over the xmas period...

Got 3 weeks until my next race (Sidcup 10 mile) so distance running and hill training between now and then.

Long term goal is get my half marathon time down to under 1.45. Won't happen at Tunbridge Wells or Hastings half as they're too hilly but i'm hoping to achieve my goal at the flat Paddock Wood race.

Keep it up runners!

Well, I've now had almost a month off running since doing whatever it was I did to my foot on boxing day.

My GP was so unsympathetic that I went to a private physio instead, the bills for which are currently making me weep, but even they can't seem to decide if I've pushed a navicular bone out of place, dislocated my little toe or just torn the ligament that runs right down between the 4th and little toe. Joy! So now I'm being referred back to a consultant and lord only knows how long that will take.

7 weeks until my half marathon, just over 3 until the London marathon, I've not gone further than 11 miles yet and I have no clue when I'll be able to run on this foot again. Place your bets on which I will or won't be able to do, now!

:)

i did a mile in 6'59 at 22.00 last night!

the craziest thing is, i thought i was doing shit and didnt push myself, could have been even better :(

gonna keep going as normal this week, and start doing 3 miles next week, wooooooo

How do you know you've done a mile? Is it one of those new-fangled technology things called pedometers, the likes of which would bemuse me for weeks on end?

Bought proper running shoes today from a proper running shop, with a proper video session of my feet on a treadmill, ....... and for a proper price. :)

But the kind assistant mischarged me for the matching socks, somehow entering them at -£1.30. ;)
