stephen07
By the way to all the KOL haters watch how many albums they are gonna sell later this month. Top band around at the minute. Edited September 17, 2008 by stephen07
King Blue
They played V and TITP as second headliners, played Reading twice at second and for me just arn't any bigger then they were then. They're a second headliner if ever I've seen one, maybe they could come back and headlne in 2010 but I don't think they're yet big enough... they could I guess but no way would they book both KoL and Arctics as headliners. pink_triangle
I cant understand the people saying kol cant headline, seems to be mainly from rock fans who arent really into the music. The stats dont lie though they have 3 albums 2 reached number 3 and the other number 1. Upcoming album bound ot get to number 1 unless up against westlife or someone like that. Single at number 1 which is very rare for an indie band unless its a kind of novelty song like ting tings. Also they have just headlined the biggest festival in britain (Possibly the world) which has caused their stock to increase dramaically. How many bands headline glastonbuty and then come to reading/leeds and play second fiddle to someone else the next year, i think that would be nobody! hearing_aid
I reckon they will headline next year. Obviously they are only gonna headline festivals now. Before they were offered the Glsatonbury headline slot they were going to take an extended break, though once they got the headline slot they knew they had to take advantage of that and do a new album etc. I think its likely that the break is still on the cards for maybe the end of next year, or maybe an assault on america seeing as they have conqured europe. I'm pretty sure this will be topped off with a headline set at Reading and Leeds if at all possible.
pink_triangle
Galstonbuty is where a band gets the prestige but its reading/leeds and v where the bands get their payday. Its posible the bands stock may never be as high so cant blame them for cashing in.
gazza_20
so the idea of kol and arctics heading isn't the worst idea then, arctics as your indie header and well kol as an american rock header. just the sunday then. razorlight and arctics are pretty much going to head a fest next yr and its almost defo reading is the british stage for kol to return with the new album too and for the indie header, arctics and razorlight, killers last year, foos have been ruled out in general, the kooks won't obvs. just the sunday headliner to be chose, i've never thought that green day, linkin park etc would do the sat, its just wether kol/arctics etc do the fri or sat depending on indie/alternate day
jammy2211
I think KoL and Arctic's won't both be booked, unless the organisers are out of other bands. I guess at the moment alot of bands are seemingly ruling themselves out, I'd say it much more likely we'll see one of KoL and Arctics and one of Linkin Park and Muse, then Green Day on the Sunday. I'd be very disappointed if they both headlined as they both bored the hell out of me at previous Readings, I'm not holding high hopes for the line up this year anyway so I guess it doesn't bother me too much. Hoping to get a second festival in for my fix of bands - I'm sure the lower stages will turn over something of note.
iammonky
Why all the talk about KOL, Is it usual for a band to one year; -Headline Glastonbury -Second Headline V -Second Headline Tinthepark & Oxygen Then headline Leeds/Reading the next year. I know there the in thing and there new albums supposed to be great. But isnt that a bit of festival overkill. Especially when they second headlined Leeds/Reading in 2007. Im not getting too excited by the rumours for next year. Looking very likely to be AC/DC and Artic Monkeys. Just hope there is actually a few suprises in there, anything from; Beastie Boys, Matchbox Twenty, Snow Patrol, Blink 182, Bush, Korn, Stone Temple Pilots, System of a Down, The Zutons, Weezer or even U2. Greeny_Musicchild
you just answered my argument there. Both RATM and Metallica are from the 'metal' genre, and i don't think there's that much of a difference. if we're picking at berries then kol are a rock n roll, boy dylan inspired, south american rock band, opposed to an indie band, and arctic monkeys are polished version of the strokes. not just indie bands. my point is, like you just have, is that you can find great differences between bands in the same genre. there's not much diversity between ratm and metallica, kol and arctic monkeys, pixies and foo fighters. they are all good examples of a lack of diversity. i saw the beastie boys last year, and although they should be, i don't think they're big enough to headline reading/leeds anymore. and although on record they have a "heavy" side, especially in their early years, nowadays they're very much a hip hop act, more turntables than live instruments. would make a fantastic nme/radio 1 headliner though. Greeny_Musicchild
Next Years Headers.... Friday - Insert "older" or reunited band here. Saturday - Arctic Monkeys Sunday - Insert "Heavy" or "Indie" band here...based on the fridays choice. I'm getting mightily sick of this reunion culture...it gets me down.. King Blue
Arctics and KOL arn't the same band either...but it's more that 2 bands coming out of the new british music scene (KOL arn't british, but did come from that scene) headlining the festival...i just don't see it. And KOL are most certainly not a south american inspired rock band anymore. The first album sure, the second, fine. But not the third, and really not this new one...they're sound have shifted so massively since YAYMH, they're just another non-discernible rock band. And it's a shame, i loved the first album, and they are undoubtedly fantastic live.
Greeny_Musicchild
That just plain ain't true. If you were to correlate KOL with the indie scene, they'd be the result of The Strokes, who are also not British. Kings Of Leon come from America and sound American. Kings Of Leon have moved even further away from being 'indie' so theres no problem I can see with both them and AM headlining. Being from the same generation doesn't make a band too similar. I really don't see whats hard to get about Kings Of Leon headlining, even if you don't like them. They aren't many bands bigger right now. Even if they don't next year cause its too soon and all that, they are as suited candidate as it gets.

stephen07
Completely disagree aswell. Last time they played Reading they did a three hour set due to 50 Cent being bottled off and they still only played 2 songs from 'American Idiot',granted it wasn't released until the week or so after. They'd be more likely to do the same again i'd say. Also they toured 'American Idiot' to death and as a band i'd say are more likely to drop alot of those songs to go back and play things they haven't played in awhile to keep it fresh for themsleves and fans. On the next tour i can see them playing 'American Idiot','Holiday','Boulavard of Broken Dreams' and 'When September Ends' as staples of their set but doubt the other songs from that album will be played EVERY night.Others may pop up but be used in rotation.Much like Metallica and older bands do with their sets. thomasowen
Greenday will headline, thats for sure, but the question is whether they will play the 'heavy day' or one of the other two days. If they dont headline on the Reading Sunday / Leeds Frdiay then ACDC will surely be headlining (or less possibly Iron Maiden). I am very confident that KOL or Arctic Monkeys will play but not both together (I think Arctics are most likely as they are british) . Below are some combinations I think possible. Oasis are in with a shout too. LEEDS DAYS friday - Greenday Saturday - Arctic Monkeys or Kings Of Leon Sunday - Oasis Friday - ACDC Saturday - Arctic Monkeys or Kings Of Leon Sunday - Greenday

nowimjustsentimental
Just a pure guess (including the return of many bands to the limelight next year) I could imagine the line up looking a bit like this: FRIDAY main stage: ARCTIC MONKEYS STONE TEMPLE PILOTS PLACEBO THE HIVES FOALS radio 1/ nme stage: BIFFY CLYRO TV ON THE RADIO LATE OF THE PIER ESSER SATURDAY main stage: GREEN DAY NO DOUBT FLAMING LIPS THE CRIBS GALLOWS ...................... radio 1/ nme stage: YEAH YEAH YEAHS VAMPIRE WEEKEND THE DEATHSET TWISTED WHEEL SUNDAY main stage: AC/DC (OR AEROSMITH) NINE INCH NAILS INTERPOL THE STREETS MASTADON radio 1/ nme stage: FLAMING LIPS THE MIGHTY BOOSH (OR FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS) MUTEMATH dance stage: DJ SHADOW/ CUT CHEMIST SIMIAN MOBILE DISCO METRONOMY DATAROCK concrete jungle: GLASSJAW THE BRONX I'd really love to also see The Cure, Mars Volta, Death Cab For Cutie, One Day As A Lion, Scars On Broadway, Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip, These New Puritans, Primal Scream and Zico Chain in there somewhere too.
