It isn't a strict contract thing. It's a trend. Bands that headline the NME tour are both popular and touring. Making them an obvious choice for R&L.

And the Cure would headline. They're phenomenally huge. They play arenas and stadiums and headline festivals. Also, they like to play nice long slots, up to 3 hours, so would plain refuse anything shorter than 1h45.

There is no way they could headline the Mainstage, or atleast do it justice in a ticket selling sense (which is what it is about, really). I think it's very possible the could do the NME Tent, however it would certainly be special. If I were a Cure fan, then I would love the idea of that.

They arern't though or there most recent album wouldn't have bombed.

You have to look at the Reading / Leeds demographic, I can honestly say I have never seen anyone at the festival wearing a Cure Tshirt, and I dont think they would draw a big enough crowd to headline the main stage.
