raka13
The Haunted have now been confirmed The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that Swedish thrashers THE HAUNTED have been added to the bill for BOA 2009. The Haunted were formed in Gothenburg in 1996 from the ashes of At The Gates and originally consisted of guitarists Patrik Jensen and Anders Björler, bassist Jonas Björler, drummer Adrian Erlandsson and Peter Dolving on vocals. The band released their self-titled debut on Earache Records in 1997 and immediately made a major impact on the metal scene, winning Terrorizer magazine’s Album Of The Year. Both Dolving and Erlandsson quit in 1999, the latter going on to join Cradle Of Filth. Replacing the pair with Marco Aro and Per Möller Jensen, the band then issued their second album The Haunted Made Me Do It in 2000, showcasing a sound somewhat closer to the melodic death metal of At The Gates than the thrash metal of their debut. Over the years, they have continued to produce music which crosses the boundaries between thrash and death and have also proved influential on the metalcore genre. Their third album, One Kill Wonder emerged in 2003 but despite its success, Marco Aro quit soon afterwards with original vocalist Peter Dolving returning to the mic. Since his reinstatement, the band have issued three albums; 2004’s rEVOLVEr, The Dead Eye in 2006 and finally Versus which appeared in September. Known for their blistering, in-your-face live shows, their assault on Bloodstock promises to be brutal and unrelenting. raka13
The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that Finnish folk metallers TURISAS have been added to the bill for BOA 2009. This will be the band’s ONLY UK performance in ’09! Turisas were formed in 1997 in the southern Finnish city of Hämeenlinna and quickly developed a sound incorporating elements of folk, Viking and power metal. They spent the next few years honing their style and recording demos for promotional purposes. Their debut album Battle Metal was subsequently released in 2004 and almost immediately spawned its own sub-genre – battle metal – since used to refer to Turisas and other bands with a strong influence from Northern European folk history. Tragedy struck in 2005 when guitarist Georg Laakso was seriously injured in a road accident, but although he was forced to quit as a result, the rest of the band resolved to forge ahead without him. Continuing to tour and gather momentum, Turisas were voted ‘Best New Band’ in Metal Hammer’s 2006 readers’ poll. Their second album The Varangian Way appeared in 2007, upping the ante on every front and winning the band many new fans and glowing reviews. They have become something of a festival institution, playing most of the major outdoor events across the length and breadth Europe and making their first UK debut at B.O.A. in 2007 with a rapturously received set of blood, thunder and… sauna. 2008 has seen the band embark on their biggest ever tour, supporting DragonForce throughout the UK, Europe and the US and also the release of their first DVD A Finnish Summer With Turisas. 2009’s UK EXCLUSIVE show will witness their welcome return to the beer-soaked fields of Bloodstock – cheers! raka13
UK EXCLUSIVE PERFORMANCE FOR 2009 The Bloodstock team are delighted to announce that Swedish goth metallers KATATONIA have been added to the bill for BOA 2009. Katatonia were formed in Stockholm in 1991 by Jonas Renkse and Anders ‘Blakkheim’ Nyström and started life as a hybrid doom/death metal crossover before gradually shifting to a more mainstream atmospheric gothic/alternative rock sound, a move which began in earnest on their third album Discouraged Ones. Having made a name for themselves on the underground with their Jhva Elohim Meth demo, the band released their debut album Dance Of December Souls on No Fashion records in 1993. A period of line-up instability threatened the future of the band and it would not be until 1996 that their sophomore effort Brave Murder Day eventually appeared. Featuring guest vocals from Opeth’s Mikael Åkerfeldt, the album marked a further development in their sound and, like their debut, was a critically acclaimed success. Renkse was back on vocals for Discouraged Ones, adopting a clean singing style which, although a risky gamble, proved to be a major turning point and helped them reach a much wider audience. At this point, the band signed a long term deal with UK label Peaceville and began a run of releases building on their signature style and culminating in 2006’s The Great Cold Distance, their most dynamic work to date. Their eighth, as-yet-untitled studio album is expected later this year. raka13
The Bloodstock team are delighted to announce that British metal legends SAXON have been added to the bill for BOA 2009. Saxon were formed in South Yorkshire in 1977 from the ashes of two other local outfits, SOB featuring guitarist Graham Oliver and bassist Steve Dawson, and Coast, featuring vocalist Biff Byford and guitarist Paul Quinn. The band briefly operated under the moniker Son Of A Bitch before renaming themselves Saxon. The group busied themselves recording demos and playing the club circuit which eventually brought them to the attention of Pete Hinton at EMI who subsequently recommended them to French label Carrere. The band’s self-titled debut album emerged in 1979 at the height of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), a popular grassroots movement which Saxon have been synonymous with ever since. Something of a pot-boiler, the album was a modest success, although it lead to a support slot on Motorhead’s ’79 UK tour, which opened many more doors for the band. The follow up, 1980’s Wheels Of Steel, however, was a monster hit, cracking the UK top five and spawning two chart singles, both of which saw the band appear on Top Of The Pops. It started a phenomenal run of success with Strong Arm Of The Law (1980), Denim And Leather (1981), The Eagle Has Landed (1982), Power And The Glory (1983) and Crusader (1984) all charting worldwide and heralding increasingly extensive headline tours. 1985’s Innocence Is No Excuse introduced a slick new sound disliked by some of the band’s hardcore following, and although the following year’s heavier Rock The Nations redressed the balance again, the band were shaken by the departure of Steve Dawson. Coupled with the shifting musical climate, the change saw Saxon enter a period of uncertainty which was reflected in 1988’s patchy Destiny. Having recruited young bassist Tim 'Nibbs' Carter, the band began a slow fight back with 1990’s weighty Solid Ball Of Rock and ‘92’s Forever Free, but it wasn’t until 1995 and the release of Dogs Of War that a true Saxon revival took hold. Graham Oliver was replaced by Doug Scarrat at this point and since then the band have never looked back. Unleash The Beast (1997), Metalhead (1999), Killing Ground (2001), Lionheart (2004) and The Inner Sanctum (2007) have all stayed true to the classic Saxon sound whilst keeping the band sounding fresh and invigorated. Their latest epic Into The Labyrinth is expected early next year. As one of the ultimate good-time live acts, Saxon’s return to Bloodstock will get fists pumping and heads banging like no other band can. raka13
AMON AMARTH UK FESTIVAL EXCLUSIVE FOR 2009 !! The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that Viking metallers AMON AMARTH have been added to the bill for BOA 2009. Amon Amarth were formed in Stockholm in 1992, issuing several demos during the next few years which eventually led to a deal with Pulverised Records who released the mini-album Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds in 1996. Metal Blade were suitably impressed with the band’s epic death metal and promptly signed them on a long term contract. Their first full-length album Once Sent From The Golden Hall appeared in 1998 and saw the band embark on an album-tour-album cycle which laid the foundations for a wider international profile. Both The Avenger (1999) and The Crusher (2001) built on the success of Once Sent From The Golden Hall, with relentless touring taking the band’s increasingly impressive live show to bigger and bigger audiences. 2002’s Versus The World and 2004’s Fate Of Norns saw the band break through to the next level, extensive worldwide touring, a triumphant show at Wacken ’04 and a legendary performance at Bloodstock indoor in 2005 capping a highly successful period. Following Fate Of Norns was never going to be easy, but 2006’s With Oden On Our Side did just that with consummate ease. Clearly the band’s most carefully crafted album to date, it saw them tour worldwide yet again and begin to win support from the wider metal community. Their current album Twilight Of The Thunder God has continued their global rise, charted impressively all over the world and seen them raid UK shores once more as part of the recent Unholy Alliance tour. raka13
Three more bands today The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that Northern Irish rockers MILLION DOLLAR RELOAD have been added to the bill for BOA 2009. Recalling the glory days of AC/DC, Guns N Roses and Aerosmith, M$R first brought their ballsy hard rock to life touring Ireland’s club circuit before taking their high-energy show to the rest of the UK in support of Alice Cooper, Black Label Society, Thin Lizzy and many others. This brought them to the attention of London-based label Lime Records who promptly signed the band and issued their debut Anthems Of A Degeneration in October 2008. Produced by Neil Calderwood (The Answer, The Almighty) the album enjoyed a great reception worldwide and the band plan to capitalise on this with global touring throughout 2009 including what promises to be a balls-out performance at their very first Bloodstock . Click the Link Below to View the MILLION DOLLAR RELOAD Bloodstock band Profile page . http://www.bloodstock.uk.com/bands-profile.php?id=333 MILLION DOLLAR RELOAD – Get It Up - BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR 2009 ******************** The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that US thrashers MUNICIPAL WASTE have been added to the bill for BOA 2009. Municipal Waste were formed in Richmond, Virginia in 2000. Born from a passion for the old-school crossover thrash scene of the 1980s and bands such as D.R.I., Suicidal Tendencies, Nuclear Assault and Attitude Adjustment, they quickly made a name for themselves on the gig circuit with their chaotic live shows. After incessant touring and the release of three EPs, the band finally issued their debut album Waste ‘Em All in 2003. Its good-time blend of fast, furious and often funny hardcore thrash was an underground hit and the band quickly became the leaders of the current thrash revival movement. In 2005, Municipal Waste inked a deal with UK label Earache and subsequently released their sophomore effort Hazardous Mutation to rave reviews all round. The band then embarked on yet another mammoth round of touring which took in a European trek with Sick Of It All, US dates with GWAR and UK appearances at the prestigious Reading and Leeds Festivals. 2007 saw the release of the band’s most recent album The Art Of Partying which easily maintained their status as the kings of loud, drunk, party thrash and saw them tour with Destruction, Suicidal Tendencies and The Haunted. Enslaved were formed in 1991 by Ivar Bjørnson and Grutle Kjellson. Joined by drummer Trym Torson, they released their first demo in 1992 followed by the mini-album Hordanes Land in ’93. 1994 saw the release of both their debut album Vikingligr Veldi and its follow up Frost, as well as the band’s first tour which extended into 1995. Returning in 1997 with Eld, Enslaved presented a sound which incorporated many more Viking metal elements than their earlier work, a theme which was rolled back somewhat on 1998’s Blodhemn. In 2000, they issued one of the most important albums of their entire career Mardraum (Beyond the Within). Fusing progressive rock elements to their established black and Viking metal hybrid, they established a new direction which would see them reach out to a much wider audience. 2001’s Monumension and 2003’s Below the Lights continued this progression, and following an overhaul of their line-up, the band began to develop as a powerful live act to match the ambition of their studio work. The new line-up released ISA in ’04 and Ruun in ’06, both of which met with great critical acclaim and saw Enslaved scoop Norwegian Grammy awards. After a long run of highly-successful touring, the band once again returned to the studio for last year’s Vertebrae which looks set to continue a remarkable succession of albums which have done much to re-write the rules of extreme metal. Guitarist Ivar Bjørnson sent this message: “We just got word that we’re playing the 2009 edition of Bloodstock Open Air! It will be our first appearance at a UK festival ever – what an absolutely great place to begin! The reception for both the Vertebrae album and its accompanying tour in the UK has been beyond anything we could hope for. Both writers and listeners have boosted our confidence through placing us at the top of their various polls, now it is our privilege to prove them right on stage; see you all at Bloodstock!” Click the Link below to View the ENSLAVED Bloodstock band Profile page . http://www.bloodstock.uk.com/bands-profile.php?id=331 ENSLAVED – As Fire Swept Clean The Earth - BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR 2009 Line up so far: AMON AMARTH, APOCALYPTICA, CANDLEMASS, DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER, ENSLAVED, KATATONIA, MILLION DOLLAR RELOAD, MUNICIPAL WASTE, SATYRICON, SAXON, TURISAS, THE HAUNTED, WINTERSUN, SABATON, Date: 14th, 15th, 16th August 2009-01-26 Location: Catton Hall, Walton on Trent, Derbyshire To purchase your tickets to the UK’s biggest metal party of 2009 go to http://www.bloodstock.uk.com
raka13
Just had another confirmation; The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that symphonic metallers BATTLELORE have been added to the bill for Bloodstock Open Air 2009. Battlelore were formed in Lappeenranta, Finland in 1999 by guitarist Jyri Vahvanen and bassist Miika Kokkola. The band’s style is an eclectic hybrid of death, power and folk metal influences, with lyrics and imagery inspired by Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. After issuing several demos, the band signed with Napalm Records who issued their debut album …Where the Shadows Lie in 2002 to overwhelmingly positive reviews. The follow-up Sword’s Song appeared in 2003 to further success and saw the band embark on their first European tour. Following the 2004 release of the in-concert DVD The Journey, Tomi Mykkänen replaced Patrik Mennander as lead vocalist and the band released their third album Third Age of the Sun in 2005. The album represented a great leap forward musically and breached the top 40 album chart in the band’s home country. 2007’s Evernight presented a darker, more epic approach which matured further on their most recent release, 2008’s The Last Alliance, the ultimate expression of the bombastic Battlelore trademark sound. raka13
UK EXCLUSIVE ! The Bloodstock team are humbled beyond words to announce that Scumdogs of the Universe GWAR have been added to the bill for Bloodstock open Air 2009. GWAR were formed in the US in 1985 and have become best known for their over the top costumes and outrageous stage antics. Although influenced by both punk and thrash, the band’s sound has shifted and evolved throughout their career as the demands of their lyrical themes and stage performances have changed. Their debut album Hell-O was released in 1988 and featured the core line-up of Oderus Urungus (lead vocals), Flattus Maximus (lead guitar), Balsac the Jaws of Death (rhythm guitar) and Beefcake the Mighty (bass guitar), characters which remain in the band today, although their costumes are not necessarily worn by the same musicians! GWAR have issued many further albums over the years, some varying greatly in style from others, but each characterised by the band’s unique and anarchic sense of theatre and boasting titles such as America Must Be Destroyed, This Toilet Earth and We Kill Everything. Targeting celebrities and other public figures with their black comedy whilst spraying their audiences with gallons of fake bodily fluids, a GWAR gig is a performance quite unlike any other. Waterproofs and wellies are recommended. The band are allegedly working on a new album tentatively titled Lust In Space. The mighty Oderus would like us to pass on the following message “Greetings people of Earth, it is I, ODERUS URUNGUS, lead singer of the BLOODIEST band in metal history, the mighty GWAR! And it is with a sense of toe-curling delight and impending DOOM that I announce the addition of the GWAR to the mammoth BLOODSTOCK Open Air Metal Festival to be held this summer in England. Thats right, from the frozen depths of Antarctica, GWAR brings what BLOODSTOCK needs...BLOOD! Prepare yourself for the most colossal, disgusting, and completely politically incorrect show in metal history! We'll bring the swords, you bring the bodies, and together we shall turn the slam-pit into a seething mass of DEATH not seen in Europe since the fall of Berlin! GWAR is playing BLOODSTOCK...and may the Pope choke on it!” Click the Link below to view the GWAR Bloodstock band profile page . http://www.bloodstock.uk.com/bands-profile.php?id=336 GWAR – Derbyshire Must Be Destroyed - BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR 2009. raka13
Got some good news and some bad news. Goodnews is we've got one headline sorted; CARCASS AND ARCH ENEMY CO-HEADLINER AND UK EXCLUSIVE SHOWS CONFIRMED FOR BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR 2009! The Bloodstock team are delighted to announce that death metal giants CARCASS and ARCH ENEMY have been added to the bill for BOA 2009. The pair will co-headline one day of the festival and the event will mark the ONLY UK shows of 2009 for both bands! The origins of Carcass go right back to 1985 when guitarist Bill Steer and drummer Ken Owen formed their first band together, Disattack. Bassist Jeff Walker joined in 1986 and the band soon changed their name to Carcass, issuing the legendary Flesh Ripping Sonic Torment demo the following year. The band then came to the attention of UK indie label Earache who issued their debut album Reek Of Putrefaction in 1988. Although mired by muddy production, the album’s extreme sound and shocking artwork helped make it something of an overnight sensation and generated the sort of publicity which set the band on their way to becoming extreme metal legends. The band’s second album Symphonies Of Sickness, released in 1989, saw their sound begin to shift from grindcore to death metal, a trend which continued on 1991’s Necroticism - Descanting The Insalubrious and which concluded with the much slicker and more straightforward Heartwork, released in 1993. By this time, Carcass had become well-established as a twin-guitar band with Swedish axeman Michael Amott having joined their ranks in 1990. In 1994, the band signed with Columbia Records, a major deal which should have allowed them to break out of the underground. Instead, Amott’s departure following Heartwork, a lack of focus within the band and constant label interference culminating in a withdrawal of their support led the band to split up before their final album - 1996’s Swansong - was even released. The band eventually reformed in 2007 with drummer Daniel Erlandsson replacing Ken Owen whose illness prevented him from taking part. In the years since their original demise, Carcass’ influence has continued to grow making their reunion shows some of the most hotly anticipated in recent times. In 1996, Michael Amott - now ex-Carcass - formed the melodic death metal band Arch Enemy, who released their debut full-length Black Earth later the same year. Although intended as a one-off project, the album’s success encouraged Amott to make Arch Enemy full time, and they returned with the Stigmata album in 1998. Following 1999’s Burning Bridges, frontman Johan Liiva left to be replaced by Angela Gossow and Arch Enemy found even greater success aided by the wave of media interest generated by extreme metal’s most high-profile female vocalist. Wages Of Sin (2001), Anthems Of Rebellion (2003), Doomsday Machine (2005) and Rise Of The Tyrant (2007) have all seen Arch Enemy continue to expand their fan base, the latter being the band’s highest charting album to date. They are currently working on an album of re-recorded songs from the pre-Gossow era. For one night only, two of death metal’s biggest names are set to bring mayhem to Bloodstock in what will surely go down in festival history as a truly unforgettable spectacle. CARCASS vs. ARCH ENEMY – To The Death! - BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR 2009. raka13
The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that Portuguese goth metallers MOONSPELL have been added to the bill for Bloodstock Open Air 2009. Moonspell formed in 1989 under the name Morbid God, switching to Moonspell in ’92 and issuing their first EP Under The Moonspell in ’94. The EP caught the attention of Century Media records who signed the band to a six album deal. 1995 saw the release of their first full-length album Wolfheart and an extensive European tour, both of which helped make Moonspell the most recognizable metal band from a country not widely known for its rock scene. 1996’s Irreligious began a shift away from black metal and towards a gothic metal sound, a trend continued on 1998’s Sin/Pecado and 1999’s The Butterfly Effect which also began to introduce an experimental edge which proved divisive among fans. For their next two albums Darkness And Hope and The Antidote, the band collaborated with noted producer Hiili Hiilesmaa, whose work includes several albums by HIM, before re-enlisting the services of Waldemar Sorychta for 2006’s Memorial. Sorychta had previously produced their first three albums and Memorial saw the band return to a heavier sound which was well-received and made the album their most successful to date. Sorychta also worked on the band’s most recent album, 2008’s Night Eternal, another critical success and one which looks set to top its predecessors in the fullness of time. raka13
The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that thrash legends KREATOR have been added to the bill for BOA 2009. Kreator were formed in Essen, Germany in 1982, calling themselves Tyrant and then Tormentor before settling on Kreator prior to signing with Noise records in 1985. Influenced by Venom, Slayer and Metallica, Kreator’s early sound was raw and ragged and similar to fellow countrymen Destruction and Sodom who, along with Kreator, were the mainstays of a burgeoning German scene which dominated European thrash in the mid-1980s. Kreator’s debut Endless Pain was a significant underground success but it was with the release of the follow up Pleasure To Kill the following year that the band garnered international acclaim. Terrible Certainty followed in ’87 and remains what many fans consider to be the band’s best album. 1989’s Extreme Aggression maintained the momentum which had propelled Kreator from the grimy streets of their hometown to their first US tour and regular rotation on MTV. The release of Coma Of Souls in 1990 was the first time that the band faltered, issuing an album which some critics felt to be rushed and somewhat repetitive. This foreshadowed an uncertain phase in their career when the band responded to changes in the mainstream metal scene by shifting their sound in a more experimental direction, incorporating elements of industrial and death metal which alienated much of their established fan base. Renewal (1992), Cause For Conflict (’95), Outcast (’97) and Endorama (’99) all deviated from the band’s ‘80s sound, and by the end of the ‘90s they looked close to collapse. In 2001, however, Kreator stormed back to form with their comeback album Violent Revolution which saw them return to the classic thrash style. 2005’s Enemy Of God continued a renaissance which looks set to culminate with the just-released Hordes Of Chaos, another slice of old-school thrash brutality from one of the best in the business. Kreator mainman Mille Petrozza sent the following message: “We have heard a lot about the Bloodstock Festival. Only good things! A British mega event that is about music, not about the latest flavour of the week. Made by metal fans for metal fans. Now the time has come, Bloodstock must be destroyed! raka13
The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that German folk metallers EQUILIBRIUM have been added to the bill for Bloodstock Open Air 2009 . Equilibrium were formed in Bavaria in 2001, originally for just one gig. However, buoyed by the reaction to the show, they decided to stay together and eventually recorded their first demo in 2003. The demo soon came to the attention of underground label Black Attakk who promptly offered the band an album deal. Issued in 2005, their full-length debut Turis Fratyr combined rousing folk metal with elements of black metal, traditional instruments and lyrics sung entirely in German. A critical success, the release gained the band a slot at several high-profile summer festivals that year. Impressed with their performances, long running label Nuclear Blast signed the band for their second and most recent effort Sagas, which extends and develops their sound in an even more epic direction. raka13
The Bloodstock team are pleased to announce that GIRLSCHOOL have been added to the bill for Bloodstock Open Air 2009. Girlschool emerged from the highly prolific New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement which dominated the UK rock scene in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s, and spawned the likes of Iron Maiden, Saxon, Def Leppard and Diamond Head. Originally operating as a covers band under the moniker Painted Lady, the band changed their name to Girlschool in 1978, releasing their debut single Take It All Away the same year. This led to interest from Motörhead’s management and a support slot on the Overkill tour in early 1979. The tour brought the band to the attention of Motörhead’s label Bronze Records who signed Girlschool and issued their debut album Demolition in the spring of 1980. 1981 saw the release of their second album Hit And Run, a sell-out UK tour and a headline slot at the prestigious Reading Festival. Their notorious collaboration with Motörhead – the St. Valentine’s Day Massacre EP – also appeared in ’81, hit No. 5 in the charts and helped make this the most successful period in their career. After releasing Screaming Blue Murder in 1982, the band hit the road in the U.S. for stadium tours alongside Iron Maiden, Deep Purple, Scorpions and Blue Öyster Cult. Their fourth album, Play Dirty, followed in ’83. Line-up changes and a softening of the band’s signature sound saw both their profile and popularity dwindle as the ‘80s progressed, and they would spend the greater part of the 1990s inactive after the release of their eponymous 1992 album. They eventually returned in 2002 with the 21st Anniversary – Not that Innocent album, rebuilding their fortunes from the ground up and issuing Believe in 2004 and their latest full-length Legacy last year. 2008 also saw the release of a 30th anniversary DVD celebrating the career of the longest running female rock band in the world. eFestivals
how old is that pic of Girlschool - they looked like that in 1979 at the old marquee club, but surely they don't now? And shouldn't they have changed their name, to 'middle-aged ladies knitting club' or something?
raka13
The Bloodstock team are delighted to announce that both BLIND GUARDIAN and CRADLE OF FILTH have been added to the bill for Bloodstock Open Air 2009. The pair will co-headline one day of the festival and the event will mark the ONLY UK shows of 2009 for both bands! Following Blind Guardian’s unfortunate cancellation in 2007, the Bloodstock Open Air team have responded to constant demand from the festival’s core fans and brought the band back to Bloodstock at the earliest possible opportunity. Neither Cradle Of Filth nor Blind Guardian will need any introduction to metal fans. Both are leaders in their genres, and both have built long and successful careers through hard work, dedication, a refusal to compromise and, of course, some very fine metal music along the way. Influenced by the Scandinavian black metal scene of the early ‘90s, Cradle Of Filth soon developed their own unique take on its frenetic sound, delivering a gothic and decidedly English take on the genre which broke into the mainstream consciousness with the release of the landmark Dusk And Her Embrace album in 1996. Since then, the band has steadily expanded their base without diluting either their sound, their spectacular stage shows or the controversial themes which their music so vividly brings to life. When it comes to power metal, few bands have proved as influential or inventive as Blind Guardian. Starting life in Germany in 1984, the band issued their debut album Battalions Of Fear in 1988, following it up with Follow The Blind in ’89. It was with their third opus, however, 1990’s Tales From The Twilight World that they began to move in a more epic direction which later culminated in the classics Nightfall In Middle Earth (1998) and A Night At The Opera (2002). Blind Guardian mainman Hansi Kürsch sent the following message: “It’s almost seven years since we played Bloodstock for the first time. Still we have never forgotten our first appearance in front of a fantastic British audience. Easy to imagine how thrilled we are by the chance to play there for a second time. I expect nothing but some outraging bards singing our songs with us and a band in perfect shape - take that for granted.” Cradle sent the following message: “Cradle Of Filth, metal forged from the hot friction of w*nking nuns, are very much looking forward to headlining the Bloodstock heavy metal festival this summer, especially knowing and loving most of the other bands playing on the bill over the three day weekend. But obviously not in a gay way. Carcass, Kreator, Moonspell, Arch Enemy, The Haunted, Apocalyptica, Satyricon, Enslaved, Saxon, Gwar, Candlemass, Turisas... this line-up alone places this up-and-coming British festival right up there with its sometimes-a-pain-in-the-arse-hard-to-reach European rivals. So hail to England! Hail to Bloodstock! This is a proper metal festival for proper festive metallers. No shoddy haircut screamo pap allowed! F.O.A.D.!” (Insane screaming continues and then fades to black...) BLIND GUARDIAN vs. CRADLE OF FILTH – Power And Pain - BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR 2009. Last headliner is due on Tuesday! raka13
The Bloodstock team are delighted to announce that Swedish melodic rock legends EUROPE have been added to the bill for Bloodstock Open Air 2009. The band will close the festival on the Sunday and the event will mark their ONLY UK show of 2009! Europe were formed in Upplands Väsby in 1979 by vocalist Joey Tempest and guitarist John Norum. Originally called Force, the band switched to Europe after winning a prestigious battle of the bands contest in 1982 which earned them their first record deal. Their self-titled debut album appeared the following year and was a success both in Sweden and in Japan where the single Seven Doors Hotel entered the top 10. Their second album Wings Of Tomorrow followed in ’84 and caught the attention of major label CBS who signed the band in 1985. In September ‘85, Europe began work on their international breakthrough album The Final Countdown which was released in May 1986. It was an instant smash, rated multi-platinum the world over, and its super-catchy title track reached number one in 25 countries when issued as the album’s first single. Norum, however, disliked the keyboard-heavy production and quit at the end of the year to be replaced by Kee Marcello. The band’s next album Out Of This World appeared in 1988 and although less successful than The Final Countdown, it was certified platinum in the USA and saw the band mount a major American tour with Def Leppard. 1991’s Prisoners Of Paradise all but disappeared in the midst of the grunge boom, and at the end of their 1992 tour the band opted for a lengthy sabbatical. A live appearance in Stockholm to celebrate New Year's Eve 1999 sparked speculation about an official reunion and the return of John Norum, both of which were confirmed in 2003. Their comeback album Start From The Dark was released in 2004, and although somewhat edgier than their ‘80s material, shifted in excess of 600,000 units. The more melodic Secret Society followed in 2006 and the band have just completed work on their latest effort Last Look At Eden which is set for release in time for their headline Bloodstock slot. Joey Tempest sent the following message:“RAAAAWWWWKKK! It's with great pleasure we will be returning to the UK this summer. We've just finished recording our 8th studio album Last Look At Eden. Can't wait to blast out some new tunes and some Europe classics. See you at Bloodstock festival on the 16th of August.” Click the Link below to View the EUROPE Bloodstock Band Profile page . http://www.bloodstock.uk.com/bands-profile.php?id=345 EUROPE – Rock The Night - BLOODSTOCK OPEN AIR 2009. raka13
The Bloodstock team are delighted to announce that industrial metal pioneers FEAR FACTORY have been added to the bill for Bloodstock Open Air 2009. Returning axeman Dino Cazares joins vocalist Burton C. Bell, bassist Byron Stroud and drum legend Gene Hoglan for a bulldozing Bloodstock performance! Fear Factory were formed in 1990 and over the course of an ever-shifting and evolving career, they have proved enormously influential. The band’s nascent sound was strongly reminiscent of early Napalm Death and Godflesh combined with more straightforward death metal. It was a striking combination which formed the basis of their first international success, frontman Burton C. Bell’s fusion of extreme death growls and clean vocals becoming one of the common traits of mid-to-late ‘90s modern metal bands. In 1991, the band began recording what was intended to be their debut album with producer Ross Robinson but, unhappy with its quality, abandoned the project. When they eventually signed with Roadrunner Records for 1992’s Soul Of A New Machine, some of the songs from the Ross Robinson sessions were re-recorded. Although an intense and powerful debut and a cult favourite with fans, its extreme nature has made it the least successful Fear Factory album and the only one which can convincingly be labelled death metal. The band toured extensively in support of the it, releasing a remix EP, Fear Is The Mindkiller, in 1993, a move which hinted at their future direction. The band’s sophomore effort Demanufacture emerged in 1995, offering a slicker, more industrial sound laden with samples and futuristic electronics. It remains their definitive work and was met with universal critical acclaim and some very healthy chart positions. Ramming home their advantage and seizing the moment, the band spent the bulk of the next two years touring worldwide with acts such as Black Sabbath, Megadeth and Iron Maiden, and appeared at both the 1996 and 1997 Ozzfests. An album of Demanufacture remixes entitled Remanufacture appeared in ’97 and marked the band’s first foray into the Billboard 200 chart. Their third studio album, the concept-driven Obsolete, was released in 1998 and although it included subtle developments in their overall sound, it was largely a continuation of Demanufacture’s industrial direction. It quickly became their most successful outing, entering the Billboard 100 chart and bagging them a headlining slot on the second stage at Ozzfest ’99. Pressured to capitalise on this success, the band delivered the somewhat more accessible Digimortal in 2001, and although it proved divisive with fans, it was another significant chart success. Internally, however, Fear Factory were in trouble, with Bell departing in early 2002 and the band folding soon afterwards. The pair of releases which followed – 2002’s Concrete, consisting of the aborted Ross Robinson recordings, and 2003’s Hatefiles, a b-sides and rarities compilation – were issued to fulfil contractual obligations and without the consent of the band. It eventually emerged that the personal tensions within the band surrounded guitarist Dino Cazares and the remaining three members reunited without him in 2002 for their comeback album Archetype which was eventually released in 2004. The album marked a partial return to their industrial metal sound and was well-received, subsequent tours with Lamb Of God and Mastodon putting them firmly back in the spotlight. Alleged record company pressure led to the rush release of 2005’s Transgression which critics seemed to either love or hate and which even the band have mixed feelings about. No such uncertainty surrounded the next cycle of touring which celebrated the band’s heavyweight legacy with the likes of Darkane, Strapping Young Lad, Soilwork, Misery Index, Suffocation, Hypocrisy and Decapitated joining them on stages worldwide. The band’s Bloodstock appearance will be un-missable and this already-legendary line-up heralds the latest chapter in the remarkable story of a band whose futuristic vision has changed the face of metal forever.
