Who's watching what on tv

imho the wire is consistently great. i loved all 5 seasons. and the finale was great.

I don't think there's any part of it that isn't fantastic watching, but seasons 3 and 4 to me are the pinnacle of all television, while the other seasons are "merely" great tv.

I'm with you on this. And if you replace "Sherlock" with "Cumberbatch" it remains true.

We've reached Cumberbatch saturation point, for sure. I think he's one of those actors who is at their best when they're hired to play out of their comfort zone. So when he's just doing that thing he does, say in Sherlock or The Imitation Game, he's boring, contrived and annoying. But he's genuinely amazing in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, where he's part of an ensemble, and in 12 Years a Slave, where he's far removed from his usual 'type'.

Just bought myself The Sopranos box set after jonsing to rewatch it for a good while now. Probably my favourite ever. Gonna have to give The Wire another go when I've finished it though. For some reason have managed to get part way through it several times without ever managing to reach the end

But he's genuinely amazing in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy,

He was the worst thing in it. His crybaby breakdown was totally unconvincing but in fairness to Cumberbatch it doesn't help Michael Jayston fucking dominated that role on TV. He was Guillam done right.

The Wire can oversaturate on a binge, heavy stuff with everyone doing Very Very Important Social Commentary. As each series is so distinct you should probably watch a series, detox on something, come back.

Unlike The Sopranos which kind of easily blends together and isn't too challenging (which is a strange thing to say of a program full of murder, violence, corruption, etc.)

Easier said than done as I love a good binge but I'll have to keep that in mind when I get round to watching it again. The whole 'series 3 and 4 is some of the best television ever' thing is something I've heard a lot (especially series 4) so I need to get in on this!

Many people I know gave up during season 2 so just stick it through, I personally loved season 2 but can see why some may have disliked it, moves away from the main story of season 1 and brings in a lot of new characters, all plays out brilliantly though.

Haven't started True Detective yet, might just wait until it's finished.

The only relationship in True detective I felt had any authenticity is the one between Vince Vaughn and his wife, I'm going to stick at it I think, just because it's visually still very pleasing and the soundtrack is great.

The dusty roadhouse scenes with the lone female singer in the background remind me alot of Twin peaks, sadly nothing else about the show does :P

I thought season 2 was a good diversion, with nice follow-ups from 1 and setups for 3, but it probably is the weakest season. There's still plenty of great moments in it though.

First time around, The Wire lost me in series 2, mainly because it struggled to understand a lot of what was being said. Revisited it a couple of years later and watched it all the way through and it really is stunning telly.

I liked Season 2, but struggled because Poor White People Sob Sob. Season 1 was great because it was the projects and the corners. Season 3 - Hamsterdam - the key season. Season 4 I couldn't even make it all the way through, so so bored.

Season 5 was fun because by that point it had descended into a surreal farce.

I'm quite enjoying Mr Robot. It'll probably annoy proper techies/hackers though

It's amazing. One of the best network TV shows in years. And it's actually not bad on the tech-front. The creator seems to know vaguely what he's talking about. Many liberties and simplifications for sure but not horribly so.

I take it we're on the same page that it is clearly referencing

Fight Club and Christian Slater is the hobo Tyler Durden

I'm going to have to give up on true detective, not because it's complicated more due to Vince Vaughans terrible acting, his bad guy seems to consist of saying very short sentences very quickly with long pauses. Sounds like someone trying to start a petrol lawnmower

Its really not Rufus. Its basically porno trying to garner attention by being sexy/gory. I have friends who swear by it, then the first thing they tell me is about all of the shagging. We have redtube for that, and that's proper shagging.
