cool, that's fair enough sungubala. you answered my question really by confirming you do know more of the bands who will play through your associates etc, so therefore you were within your right to comment on the line up in more depth. hope you can understand why i questioned it though, as those would have been strange things to say had you just known two of the headliners.

I dont know the whole lineup or anything like that, but when you know a cross section you just presume that the cross section will be repeated - kind of like doing a sample survey. It could be wrong though of course, there might be the bands I know as one cross section and then heavy death metal bands across the rest of the festival...but I doubt that!

sungubala...my post was very tongue in cheek hence the smiley...

the intention wasn't to say that you're big for your boots or anything..

Its cool, I didnt think it was serious. I just thought I'd make the point that we're not as big (and I'm not as famous) as some people on here will have presumed.

mercury...

well it seems as if you hit the nail on the head with that one considering the headliners!

Apparently yes! Although I have to say that was more of my own presumption than any inside info.

annie42...

its going to be so easy to identify people from this forum at latitude

we'll be the spaced out wierdos muttering about sungubala (sp?) under our breath and looking dazed and confused, occasionally bumping into each other, recognising the glint in the other's eye, enquiring as to whether they've found this mysterious drummer, then spinning off on our merry way...

meanwhile, mystery man will be sitting atop a hill cackling at his doings..and then...he'll buy us ALL a drink

well...maybe not...but one can hope!

Haha I love it! I wish I could afford to get you all drinks but at those festival prices...geez!

If I hear any mention or see any mention of sungubala at Latitude I'll be sure to come over and say hi! Get your banner making kits out!

Uck, I can't get the image links to the scan to work anymore. But I was just thinking, could the 3 be the Uncut Arena headliners, seeing as how it was announced in Uncut? I mean, it does seem really odd that Grace Jones would be headlining, although a bit less odd the other two.

Remember that Uncut is supposed to come out in the next few days (the subscribers' copy goes out early - this isn't even the first festival this year they've pre-empted the first announcement of in that way) so when they list Obelisk headliners it's not likely to be a mistake.

I've got no problems with Cave or the PSBs (who do put on a huge live show), but I'm not sure Grace Jones' act, extravagant as it seems to be, would work in a festival setting or that she's really that big a name to a wide audience - her recent album got a lot of press but peaked at 42 and in the 22 years between albums it's not as if there was a lot of anticipation for new music.

Just reading the article in Uncut and it says - 'This year, the headliners on Latitude's main stage, the Obelisk Arena will be Nick Cave,Grace Jones and the Pet Shop Boys'.

It then goes on to say how wonderful Nick Cave is but doesn't mention the other 2!

Personally I think Nick Cave will be great. He was one of my highlights last year with Grinderman and the stuff he's doing with the Bad Seeds at the moment is some of the best stuff of his career I think.

Grace Jones is a strange choice not because I don't like her I do and her new stuff sounds really good. It's just that I don't think she's that big to be a headline act at Latitude. She headlined Secret Garden Party last year which is a lot smaller than Latitude which is about right for her.

And as for the Pet Shop Boys - what were they thinking?!? I shall be as far away from the main stage as possible to make sure I don't hear that hideous nasal drone of Neil Tennant!

I can't make it to latitude, but thought i'd pop in and see who was playing - i'm travelling from australia around the time.

I saw Grace Jones in January, she was incredible. Played a huge free outdoor show to launch Sydney Festival, and she's definitely worth getting excited about.

Saw Nick Cave around then too. Might be aussie bias, but goddamn he is extraordinary! Again, get excited.

Toodleoo, credibility.

I am pretty pleased with Nick Cave, and Pet Shop Boys I'd happily see if there were no major clashes. Grace Jones is indeed a very strange choice, she doesn't seem of the same calibre of previous headliners - she would make a strong Uncut Arena headliner though, but I do echo what everyone is saying.

That saying, let's not forget that The Good The Bad & The Queen, despite their members' respective uber-success, aren't that big. And Anthony & the Johnsons, despite being in the first (smaller) year, was also an odd choice. So maybe 2008 will prove to be the blip year, with large more commercial acts?

Anyway, the undercard better be strong. With a strong sprinkling of wishful thinking, but a grounding in realism, it could look something like this:

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds --- Grace Jones ------- Pet Shop Boys

Sonic Youth ------------------------ Seal --------- Vampire Weekend

Les Savy Fav -------------- TV On The Radio -------------- Bon Iver

Tricky ------------------------- Orange Juice ------ Animal Collective

Friendly Fires ------ Steven Maulkmus & The Jicks ---- Of Montreal

I would enjoy that a lot.

nick cave - good

sonic youth - good

tv on the radio good - good

of montreal - good

everything else - awful

I really do hope this isn't the official line-up, but it's looking more and more likely..

I bought early bird tickets on the strength of last years festival, and even though i'm only 16 i was hoping for a few older bands, but i didn't really want an 80's revival festival!

We'll just have to wait and see the line-up tomorrow, and whether i should sell my ticket, or try really hard to get into Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds...

Seriously, Steven Malkmus, Les Savy Fav, Bon Iver, Orange Juice and Animal Collective are awful? The rest aren't even that bad, just some a bit meh.

There'll be other bands you know... We can all go chill elsewhere :)

Hey mate don't worry at all.

At last years Latitude I only saw Franz Ferdinand out of the headliners. I was busy during Sigur Ros and decided not to watch Interpol. It's honestly not the headliners which make the festival. Don't force yourself into music you dont like, listen to it and if its not for you dont worry. There'll be so much other stuff happening you'll forget that Nick Cave was even playing!

You can tell it's a disatrous line-up from the way everyone who is trying to be positive (and has most likely already brought an early bird ticket and is trying to look on the bright side) is describing the line up as "interesting" or "enigmatic".

DOOM! I think am going to save my money.

We should be thanking Uncut. If they hadn't tipped us off, I would have happily gone down to HMV, brought a ticket, only to come home and realise the line-up then...
