Star Wars

I'll be getting the blu-rays of Star Wars regardless, I've seen all of them at the cinema, bought them on video at least three times each (Original, letterbox, reworked ones in the 90s), and then once on DVD, might as well get Blu-Rays also.

Bladerunner and Star Wars are utterly different films, and can't be compared I reckon, other than to say that neither of them ever seem to be finished.

I'm not saying Lucas isn't dicking around with them, btw, nor am I saying that Ridley Scott wasn't dicking around with Bladerunner either.

I don't think Vader shouting "Nooooo" really alters the film, does it? He was always going to be in two minds over it, and I think the response probably reflects his inner torment at throwing his mentor over the side ; he is still partly corrupted by the dark side, isn't he?

What has Lucas said about it, if anything?

edit : Rutger Hauer's bit at the end of Bladerunner is as strong as anything out of Star Wars, no doubt.

Well... nothing.... thats my point. Hes just copied and pasted an irrelevant "NOOOOO" in there, knowing that thats enough of a change for people to go out and pay for it.

Its not the end of the world granted but if you put yourself in Lucas' mind its quite a well thought out and cynical move.

Lucas is f**king with it again. Hes made a f**king balls of the Bluray release.

At the end of Jedi, Vader now says "NOOOOOO" (like at the end of the Revenge of the Sith <_< ) when he picks the Emperor up and lobs him down the reactor shaft.

The whole f**king beauty of the scene is the silence from Vader and Williams music soaring in the background as Vader picks The Emperor up....

You f**king arsehole Lucas.

Original.

track down the sgflix podcasts, they spent 4 hours dissecting "A New Hope" last week, and have just finished their first part of the dissection of empire, its funny, informative, very sincere and VERY thorough. I guarantee you will learn at least 2 things you didnt know about star wars from the ep4 discussion. I cant wait till they get to the prequels.

I bet in another 10 years when Holo Star Wars comes out they'll add some unecessary dialogue over The Emperor saying "Sorry Vader, what? I can't hear what you are saying over all this electricity! Eat it Skywalker! Haha! WTF Vader! This is a massively unexpected turn of events! No! Not down the elevator shaft! This is bull shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!"

People don't seam to realise that Vader's new 'Noooooo' does in fact work and make sense, when you think about the bigger picture.

Yes... adding it in there does take something away from the subtlety of the scene. Vaders simple, yet effective, looks and acting as he comes to the realisation that the emperor is killing his son are superb; and his babyface turn is all the more effective because he doesn't actually say anything.

But when you think of the larger picture, you can start to see why Lucas put it in there. At the end of Revenge of the Sith, when Anikin learns of Padme's death; we see the final colapse of the Anikin character, and the birth of Vader. This collapse is accompanied by a (somewhat shitty) cry of 'Nooooo'... a cry of anger, hate and revenge. And then the helmet goes on.

Then at the end of Return of the Jedi, we see the death of the Vader character when he turns from the dark side, tossing the emperor over the side and into the pit of eternal electricity. This is accompanied by a similar (equally shitty) cry of 'Noooooo'. This time not in anger and revenge, but one of defiance, love and restoration. He once again becomes Anikin, removes the helmet, and shares a few moments with Luke before he dies.

The implementation is extremely clumsy and poor, both in RofS and RotJ, but the intention of this particular addition by Lucas is correct... imo.

^ really? I can't image there's more that a handful of people on this earth that'd buy the blueray version just because it's got a slightly different scene in it.

People will buy it because they've never owned any of them before, or because they're now on blueray, or because they're now all in one plush box set, or because they're avid collectors of anything starwars and it's a new release. But not simply because it's ever so slightly different to the previous blueray release of the movies.

The rumours are true - both Vader yelling Nooooo! And ObiWans stupid Zoidberg scream are definitely in the Blu Rays.

I have absolutely no problem with Lucas tinkering with technical issues - matte lines, lighting, colour correction, minor composition tweaks to accommodate the larger viewable image, adding new dynamism to failed effects shots. Some of the new effects shots ate much better like the dogfights and the X-Wings approaching the Death Star - all totally fine, because they're just superficial refinements that just make it look a lot prettier and sound a little better. None of this changes anything fundamental, and allows for the actual vision to be realised a little more competently.

It's the stuff that messes with pacing, character alterations (Han no longer frying Greedo mercilessly affects the arc of his character, people think it's no big deal but it is given the context of Han starting out as a bad guy and becoming good) the dumbing down and over-explicitness of once-poignant scenes, and the retro-fitting of ideas and concepts from the utterly shit prequel trilogy because they don't actually fit together very well as a six-part series is what I find rather offensive.

Revisionism like that just exposes Lucas as dishonest, hostile and incompetent. I don't know why he twists the knife like this every time. The people who don't notice these changes wouldn't have had their decision to purchase them affected in any way - all it does is make those who are aware of the changes think twice about buying them. It MUST be because he actually hates everything, and is dead inside.

They should include the Red Letter Media reviews on each disk.

I'd suggest fast winding the first twenty five minutes or so of the first one. Other people reminiscing about not getting an AT-AT for Christmas, I don't need to hear.

In other At-At related news, I've dusted mine down and it's sitting on top of my wardrobe looking all menancing. The battery powered laser guns don't work anymore, but the AT-AT commander chap is still in there.
