any chance you can allow .bmp files to be used for avatars?

I've got some i wanted to use which i did through Paint but they are .bmp

Or is it easy to change the file type my end?

BMP files are a large size compared to other image file formats, and that's why they're not used on the web.

There's plenty of image editing software (including freeware) that will easily convert BMPs to gifs or jpgs (the best formats to use on the web) in a couple of clicks.
