Green Day added as a strong rumour!

All festivals Neil. Just look at the complaints on the Glasto forum!

true, but there's normally a far greater reaction of that sort for Reading than for other fests.

I'd say that the reason for this is related to the generally young age (compared to other fests) attendees that Reading has, and that because of that young age people's musical tastes are changing faster - and so while Reading delivers a similar-ish line-up each year (not of bands, but of style), a person's tastes will match it strongly one year but less so the following year, leading to those sorts of reactions.

Reading has been missing metal since Download started. Before, they had a decent enough amount of metal bands each year.

they did, yep ..... but that aside there's long been a perception - often from people who haven't actually ever been - that it's a metal/heavy rock fest, and each year when the line-up is announced it leads to a cry of "where's all the metal" (even before there was download). The posts on these forums over the last ten years (not all of which are still available) prove this the case.

As I understand it...

Arctic Monkeys will be headlining the Friday, Kings of Leon the Saturday and Green Day the Sunday. At Reading anyway.

I'm not sure about the rumour of Slipknot. Melvin said to me that he was irritated at them pulling out at such short notice and that they're generally a pain in the arse. He was getting more drunk as the conversation went on though, so he may have changed his mind between now and then. He also said he's annoyed by how many poor bands there are on the bill these days, especially Justice and Foals, but people want to see it so he allows it.

Glastonbury is a much better known and more mainstream festival though, or has been traditionally anyway. Hence the reaction.

As for metal...

Metallica, Rage Against The Machine, Slipknot, Mastodon, Slayer, System of a Down, Serj Tankian, Bullet For My Valentine, Killswitch Engage, Iron Maiden, Marilyn Manson, Raging Speedhorn, The Dillenger Escape Plan, Limp Bizkit...are all from various forms of metal.

Oh, and The Rasmus of course.

Well done, you have correctly restated who everyone knows is going to headline this year and haven't added anything more.

You dont know who is 2nd headlining, you dont know who is in the tent. You are just saying that the 2 biggest indie rock bands in the world right now headlining make this festival w*nk.

About 8 years ago I remember there being 3 britpop headliners and very little metal. Reading hasn't been a Metal festival since before the festival became 'Reading and Leeds'.

Although Reading does get a lot of people every year going 'the lineup is crap' the reaction has never been as bad as Glasto got last year, although that response was exagerated by the media.

Glastonbury, I think people will find, is traditionally more mainstream than Reading - for starters far more people know about it, they've always had plenty of chart-topping bands on the bill and it's been on the BBC for years.

Reading, and other festivals, have been swallowed up by the mainstream in recent years.

And 'benisright'...I think you may want to reconsider your username mate ;)
