a robot
so this year i thought it would be sweet to hire a 15 seater minibus and get 12 people in it plus bags to make the trip easier and cheaper for everyone. easy peasy right? negative! to hire/drive a minibus from a rental company you have to be 25+ and hold a D1 entitlement on your drivers license. if you passed your test before 1997 you will have this automatically (as long as you haven't renewed your license) but after then it will only be present if you take the specific test. this is annoying since at uni i took a minibus driving course and was allowed to drive theirs without the D1 entitlement (as the law goes this is fine), it is only rental companies who require it *grumble* so - i am wondering if anyone would like to drive a minibus, as long as you are D1 entitled on your license, from london on the tues night/weds morning and then back some time on monday. you will not have to pay a penny for the rental or the petrol, in effect it is free travel (just with self driving ). we have a massive trolley so would help lug your stuff on to the campsite too and reward you heavily with soft drinks/beverages, your choice and of course you can party with us too drop me a pm or reply here, woo
pezzypops
this happened to us 2 years ago. there was going to be 2 drivers, me and carol. when we got to the hire firm to pick up the bus we were told i couldn't drive it as i don't have the d1 section on my license carol is 4 months older than me and passed her test in nov. '96. i passed mine in feb. '97 so carol had to drive all the way there and back to leeds, she was not a happy bunny you can drive up to 7 passengers without a d1 (8 people in the vehicle inc. the driver) Edited January 19, 2009 by pezzypops
a robot
argh! glad i found out all beforehand, i had no idea. 7 is pretty sweet we could get two cars but the rental is lame on a week. renting a minibus for a week is much better
timespeedsup
I have a D1 on my licence, I've just checked it (it was in my wallet). As would HSC cos he's <ahem> of a more mature generation too. Plus he drives for a living these days. & we don't at this stage look like we've got transport this year. Plus your dates seem to match what I'd hoped for this year (ie early arrival). But we'd be camping in camp efests (Pennards). How many people would be allowed to drive it? You still based round Harrow/Uxbridge way?
a robot
this is very intriguing tsu, very intriguing indeed.. i think as many people can drive as they want, one place i saw added on £7.50 to the cost for an additional driver. i moved to harrow in november! haven't been around here really due to starting my phd and being lazy. but yeah, am in harrow now so even closer than before! and what would be convenient is that the cheapest minibus company is actually located in harrow too. i wouldn't be able to pick it up myself since i have no D1. if youre in pennards you would park west car park? team awesome likes to set up village in williams so we like to use west. how many spaces would you fill? little ones in tow? Sam.
Would the uni not let you borrow it for a few days if you were using it for a university based trip...
