I would love to see these at Leeds/Reading this year, sounds like there is a chance

Thurston Moore says he loves the 'disaster camp' element of the festival

Jan 26, 2009

Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore has said the band want to play this year's Glastonbury festival.

Moore says the group, who are scheduled to release their new album 'The Eternal' in June, are keen to sort out their tour itinerary as soon as possible.

"I'm almost positive we'll definitely be doing one or two festivals in the UK," he told BBC 6Music.

"I wanna play Glastonbury because it's such a disaster camp and I really enjoy that. The general consensus amongst musicians I know is that it's like walking into the pit of hell, and in some way it really feels like that."

The band last played the festival in 1998. Despite atrocious weather, Moore has happy memories of the gig.

"The only times I've ever been there it's been so incredibly messed up," he said.

"You're lucky to get through any perceptible, decent set at all and then there are these huge roving cameras on stage that are spinning around documenting the disaster. There's something about that I find really charming."

Too big for Fest Republic stage imo. Would have to be top 3 NME like you said. I'd absoloutely love to see them at a UK festival this year. However, I can't imagine such an NME driven audience that appears to be prominent at Reading atm to be to taken by Sonic Youth. I know that sounds completely elitist and I'm not knocking those people but they do seem to be more content when listening to bands who've reguarly featued on the front cover.

I spoke to Mr Benn about why there's such a lack of older bands down the lineup these days and he said it's a combination of a lack of willingness on the band's part and the expense.

Modern bands (ie 'indie') cost a lot less and have more enthusiasm for a 2:30pm slot than an older band would, apparently...

I think the problem also is these days thier is a lot of competition from other festivals where some of the older and more respected bands could play and get a better audience. A band like Sonic Youth could probably headline a band like bestival or play one of the ATP festivals know they are going to get an amazing response.

Bands like The Fall and Dinosaur Jr had a smaller amount of people watching them compared to the bands around them on the line up, which must cause a problem from a bookers point of view.
