2001, travis. manics eminen

Neither year had the traditional sunday headliner. The thing is there are not as many rock/punk/metal bands that can headline compared to indie as indie is a more popular genre here. When you take away bands that have played in recent years then there isnt too much left. If slipknot, nine inch nails and radiohead all played the sunday night slot theres no doubt in my mind which band gets the biggest audeince.

Radiohead are an amazing live band. I'm not saying they're "the greatest band I've ever seen", but Radiohead are the only band to have mesmerised me... hard to explain how, having said that, I think Rage are better, but it makes sense in my head.

ANYWAY, I'd still rather they didn't close the festival. I like the last band of the weekend to be a lively one. If Radiohead, Arctic Monkeys and Kings of Leon were the three, I'd genuinely rather Arctic Monkeys finished, even though Radiohead are more deserving of that accolade.

great set of headliners really to be honest. and when you have download, bloodstock, hellfest and sonisphere, where actually would you get a metal headliner from?

even if you had iron maiden or guns and roses, its not metal.

have they got a metal headliner no, have they got the bigggest british act and one of the biggest bands around yes, have they got the biggest band at the moment and the big pulling international band last year yes and have they got the band everyone or most people want for any festival to headline? thats yes to so any complaints is just that you dont like the bands really and if ya dont, well i'm sure you can find another festival like one that's supposed to actualyl be a metal one

That's exactly what they are saying as no doubt the likes of Glasvegas, Vampire Weekend, Stereophonics, Pigeon Detectives, Peter Doherty will be headlining the NME stage so the non indie fans are left hoping that the lock up stage is damn good.

I really think that if those 3 are the headliners a lot of regulars will be going to Sonisphere.

Your right but a lot of those have headlined recently while a lot are not available or too expensive. They arent going to put a band of nin or slipknots popularity headlining just to appease rock fans. I doubt festival republic will care if they turn rock fans away as long as other come in their place spending the same money.

Flob's right. It's okay to have an indie-dominated year, or the same for any other genre, but to try to appeal to just one section too often is eventually going to backfire. 2006 and 2007 (save for Slayer) didn't really appeal to metal fans much, and this is shaping up to be the third year out of four.

It's poor planning to assume that sixth-formers and one huge headliner (and contrary to what some people would have you believe, Radiohead are TRULY huge) from the 90s will sell the festival year on year. It only takes them to get the "huge" band wrong once and they'll end up with thousands of unsold tickets.

I'm sure they do care, indie is just a flash in a pan like emo and nu-metal, they need to have a good mixture so they can keep their foot in different genres. They will change with the times but will still need to even it out a bit especially with the headliners. Having kings of leon, arctics and radiohead as headliners will look awful in a couple of years.

To say linkin park and my chemical romance are huge hardly proves your argument that indie is at a similar level to emo and nu metal you are using exceptions to prove the rule. The enemy and the fratellis are bigger than most emo and nu metal bands by a mile and they are not even headline material. Indie bands have dominated the readling/lees line ups over several years, from the top to bottom and will continue to do so for several years to come.
