What happened to the whole smoking ban thing?

Really just to settle an argument, at glasto 2008 was the smoking ban enforced.

I remember smoking inside, although not as much as previous years, but I also remember seeing signs saying not to smoke, and don't remember anyone being asked to put anything out, however I have massive gaps in my memory (thursday for example).

So, given the fact that most of my memory of that weekend is gone, what was the situation.

as a non-smoker (not an evangelical one though, i couldn't give a rats arse whether people smoke or not, and am in two minds about the smoking ban; i like not stinking after i've been in a pub, but i hate it when all my mates head off outside for a smoke and leave me alone inside ) anyway, i digress. as a non-smoker i definitely saw a difference in the tented stages, nobody had to be asked not to smoke, people just didn't do it.

who would tell them to put them out?

there's no official 'enforcer' and the police aren't stationed in every tent. the only enforcing its cost effective to do is put up signs and let people do what they want. so yes, it was enforced.

from my own experience there was far, far less people smoking in tents than in previous years.

Yes it was enforced in 2008, although the enforcement only went as far as Fire Stewards telling people to put fags out, including me  . After a chat with a couple of fire stewards it became obvious that the police wanted no part of this illegal activity and as far as I was aware the smoking issue didn't/couldn't go any further than the fire stewards themselves. With the lack of police backup the law is unenforceable, which kind of says alot really. Did the country as a majority want this law at all, when even the police can't be bothered!!? Let alone Glastonbury!

  • 2 months later...

The local council, which is the licensing authority, may get stroppy about fire risks if too many people are smoking in the tents. Then no licence and no festival next year.

Not worth risking the festival's future for a fag. Ideally go outside or be very discreet.

P.S. I'm a smoker myself so I'm not being holier than thou but I've had dealings with stoppy council licensing people at other festivals.

This issue is exactly the sort of thing which could put the future of the festival in jeapardy, like it or not the law isn't going away.

And to be honest, the idea that someone thinks that someone is a Facist because they ask you to walk 30 feet outside a tent to smoke is pretty insulting to the real victims of facism
