Universal-Man
Hey people, I'm going to Beni for the first time this summer.... but I'm not completely clear about the whole tent scene? You see.... I'm flying to Alicante, and ideally, I'd like to buy a cheap, crap, disposable tent in Spain .... then burn it at the end of the festival ala' Hendrix on the stage at Isle of Wight. It is feasable? Surely the Spanish understand the supply and demand of festivals. Are there any places to buy tents in Benicassim? What about Alicante? If there this, do they jack the prices up to take advantage? On the flipside........how do you transport a tent on an aeroplane? Is it classed as luggage to be checked-in? I guess it's too big for hand-luggage. Any advice, constructive or abusive, will be gracefully appreciated. Thank you, and goodnight. Universal-Man
How do you transport a tent on an aeroplane.........is that a trick question?? Tents dont come pre assembled y'know...... As for the burning of it after the Festival , thats kinda frowned upon in most places these days.
bogman1979
To be honest, the whole burning thing was a bit tongue in cheek. Although, you'd be suprised to see how much it happens! I'm sure Bennicassim is far too respectable for that! I just meant I'd like to buy a tent out there which wouldn't break my heart to dispose of. Astute observation that tents don't come pre-assembled, they are also a variety of different sizes when packed away. The question was does anybody get away with taking them as hand luggage? or are they strictly to check-in? Thanks for your advice....... sinstar
A tent would have to be checked in - well, the poles and pegs at least. I flew to Benicassim one year with British Airways with quite a small tent, expecting to have to pay extra to check it in (because you can only check in one bag) but they let me check it in for free and even put it through as 'fragile' and it went in on a special conveyer belt thing. Even simpler if you can fit it in your suitcase, I did that this year at Roskilde, took a massive tent so put the poles in with my clothes and the actual tent in with my boyfriend's clothes. I wouldn't recommend getting one when you get to Spain, I didn't see ANY in Benicassim and I didn't see any 'outdoor' style shops in Barcelona. And all department stores I have been to in foreign countries just seem to be organised in a completely different way to what I expect, I can never find anything in them. Loads of times I have had to buy a new backpack/suitcase because mine broke (I should stop buying shoddy luggage) and it took me hours and hours and hours to find anything. Chris12345
Tents CANNOT be taken as handbaggage, you may get lucky and they might not see it, but legally it shouldn't happen... it's ridiculous as I could do more damage with my fists and a glass bottle from duty free, but technically both the polls and pegs count as weapons (I found out the hard way, luckily you don't actually need a tent in Spain) Also, I think you're joking, but fire is a definite no! Major bushfire risk! Edited February 20, 2009 by Chris12345
kreenie
Hi All, I took my own tent last year in my lugage, got a lightweight 3kg one which was great. However this year we are wanting to buy on out there to save on luggage (cost me £40 for suitcase last year). I probably will take this one with me to be on the safe side but was wondering if anyone knows anywhere that sells tents in or around Alicante as this is where we will be flying to and also staying for a week prior to Beni? I have googled as much as I can but with no luck so any advice is greatly appreciated. I am uncomfortable not knowing if Ill have somewhere to sleep and keep my stuff. (the blokes seem so sure there is a megamarket place where they are sold but when we went to one last year it didnt sell any!!) Please help! BangUp4Beni!
Might be worth looking into this route. http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/thread.jspa?threadID=1947859 We are flying into madrid and driving across, hence the search for this thread. But might be a useful way to look.
redandblack22
I am checking my tent as luggage and using hand luggage to carry heavy things as the is no weight limit on hand luggage who i am flying with (you just need to be able to lift the hand luggage above your head). i am sure the lidl in benicassim had an upstairs bit where there was outdoor stuff, not sure if they sold tents but sold similiar things. Codyriffic
I bought a tent at last year in benicassim town, it was pretty cheap, think about 25 euro for a two man tent, served me well! You can also buy camping chairs, coolers etc. Edited June 22, 2012 by Codyriffic
