hmmm, interesting idea, i think its plausible enough

Only things against are that if they reforming for the money it seems odd they would choose the notoriously low-paying glasto over reading/leeds who offered god knows how much

+you're right they're acting weird over it, but, y'kno is that anything new with those guys!

:)

Forgive me if I've worded it properly, this wasn't a "What do you think of The Libertines" thread, it's more of a thread for a bit of speculation about who the band playing would be.

Amazing how snobbish people can be over a band - if they aren't to your taste then fair enough, but to say that there's no talent whatsoever in any band who can play instruments, write songs and lyrics is just idiotic.

I agree 100%.....No talent there at all.....

Considering all the shit indie bands popularised by NME these days try and be an identikit of the Libs and The Strokes they must have done something right...They pretty much shaped current guitar music- for all its flaws- so can't be overlooked as a"shit" band regardless of personal taste. Plus factor in that the devotion in the number of their fans can be only seen to such an extent with Radiohead and Oasis (and by the looks of these boards Springsteen) who are critically regarded as the most important bands of the 90's. The Libertines will be looked back upon, possibly along with Arctic Monkeys as the most important British guitar band of the Naughties mark my words....

personally I always felt the libertines were ok but overrated. They've got a few reasonably good/very good songs, and the albums collectively are quite good imo but there's many better bands to me and they didn't make an impact on me as much as they have some. not seen them live mind.

I don't have much against pete either really, bar a pisspoor performance with babyshambles in 2004/2005? (other stage).

...if it was them, I wouldn't be surprised if eavis keeps it quiet tho as insurance, for if/when they don't turn up at the last minute... "the feckers not turned up, quick, go get keane!" :)

edit: not understating how they'll be looked on in the future, as I agree with irishmanc that they'll be looked on as important/influentual for the decade.

in the morning where does all the pain go, same place the fame does... straight to your head

and thats just the first line of a throwaway album track.

peter doherty is a hell of a poet either way you look at it, look at the strength of babyshambles lyrics and peters solo stuff compared to dpt's stuff, pete wrote a vast majority of the lyrics for the libs, hes a genius man, even if you dont agree with his personal life.

doubt they'll play though, it'll probably be a let-down, someone already rumoured.

If I remember correctly it said that there was an artist going to play that would only be revealed at the time they took the stage, or something very similar.

Just to start a bit of enjoyable speculation, who do you reckon it'd be?

I'd imagine that it could well be a band to appeal to a younger crowd because of the legends headlining, I reckon it could be another re-union for the 'comeback year' thing.

I reckon it's going to be the Libertines.

Some things would make sense, Pete and Carl were interviewed at the NME awards, they were asked something about when the Libertines would return and they replied that they WERE the Libertines. They performed with each other again on stage a couple of nights ago, DPT have split too, freeing up Carl Barat and Gary Powell.

Both Pete and Carl are reportedly needing the cash. That whole thing a while back about 'Pete needing to see a healer to see if he was surrounded by dark energy' does feel a bit gimmicky too.

Don't know if I'd go see them if they were to play and I admit that it's probably unlikely, but it's just a gut feeling that if it were to be that type of slot, they'd fit the bill.
