Manufactured Crap

I suppose it is how you define "Manufactured" a band plays gigs/sings songs/makes music in their bedroom, they are good and a company jumps on them, gives them a shave and shoves some money at shows, produces their work and they are manufactured, does that not cover each and ever single person who has played at V since the beginning.

If you not looking for "manufactured bands" you need to stay away from any and I mean any commercial festivals and just go to local unsigned gigs.

Would love there to be a totoally independant scene again but it did not work the first time round (only in our ideal teenage memeories)

This year the majority of the acts seem to be manufactured/pop/chart rubbish..by this im talking of:

Lilly Allen, Lady GaGa, The script, Alesha Dixon, Katy Perry, the saturdays.

In previous years we have had

2008: Hoosiers, Jamie T, Sugababes, Estelle, The Script, Feeling, Girls Aloud, Scouting For Girls, One Republic,

Compared to

2003: Appleton, Misteeq

2004: Pink, Big Brovaz, Fountains of Wayne, Kelis, Freestylers,

I've got to agree too, just looked back at the line-up for my first V in 02...

Athlete

Badly Drawn Boy

Basement Jaxx

Bluetones

Chemical Brothers

Counting Crows

Damien Rice

Dave Gahan

etc......

The Coral

Travis

Turin Brakes

I'd happily take that again! Compare that to what we know of the 2009 line-up and it strikes me that V fest is trying more & more to position itself as the first step up from T4 On The Beach :P

Also V2003 - only Appleton and Misteeq?? Sorry, disagree... if Jamie T, The Feeling etc can be classed as manufactured crap in 2008 then the following also played at V2003....

Freestylers (if they were manufactured in 04, must've been in 03 too), Jamie Cullum, Just Jack, David Gray, Morcheeba, Athlete.... (why not?)

Well for one you say that these manufactured pop acts are in the majority, of the line up, when of the 30 or so bands that were announced you have mensioned 6 of them. You also want bands to play their own instruments...like The Script do.

By your logic, you can intertwine almost any act on the line up...or even in the world into the unacceptable pop genre. For example, The Script and The Feeling play waterd down poppy soft rock, you can easily group them with Snow Patrol and Keane, so why sould they be playing? because you have the right the put certain acts into the unacceptable category?

In my opinion, Pop music has matured over the years, look at the progession of Girls Aloud, They started off in the whole bubblegum cheesy sing a long, learn the dance moves, era. Now they are very sexual, well harmonised and well produced band in their own right. Like them or not regardless of the Politics can you name any act out there thats as varied as Girls Aloud are? certainly from a commercial perspective youd be hard pushed.

Thats the wonderful thing about V festival, the variation, Everyone always complains about the lack of surprises and its lack of rocks acts...but in theory, considering that the idea of a festival was always meant to be for rock bands to congregate and make a super show of noise, surley V with their line up that has no limits and willingness to take risks on lesser respected live acts like the ones you mensioned, which just wouldnt work anywhere else, intentional or not makes it the most avant garde festival? Think about it

Looking at the initial line-up...

Killers, Oasis, Razorlight, Keane, The Specials, Snow Patrol, Elbow, The Ting Tings, MGMT, Fatboy Slim, Pendulum, The Script, Paolo Nutini, Lily Allen, The Wombats, The Streets, Biffy Clyro, Katy Perry, James Morrison, Peter Doherty, Happy Mondays, Ocean Colour Scene, The Enemy, Dizzee Rascal, Lady GaGa, James, Seasick Steve, Alesha Dixon, Taylor Swift, and The Saturdays.

There's only (I consider) 5 pop acts there. Why this thread exists? I don't know. There's a hell a lot of variation there and pop takes hardly any space. What do you define pop now-a-days? It's so broad that I really it difficult to place James Morrison and The Ting Tings in there as they offer some proper talent. None of them are not credible enough to be there. You could class Oasis as pop, Killers as Pop... but they take a stronger character in their respectable genres.

Anything more light-hearted tends to be placed at the start of the day towards early afternoon as warm-up acts for when the action kicks in the evening. To be honest, I think the organisers have got plenty of experience not to make cock-ups and place these so called "manufactured" pop acts too high up the order.

This is the beauty of V. There's something for everyone. If you want a more specialised festival, go somewhere else. Like when you had Muse and Prodigy headlining Saturday... you couldn't get too different ends of the spectrum and would of loved to seem them both. As a first time V-goer last year, I felt really torn between the evening/headliner acts. Personally, I'm just as happy with this years line-up compared with last year.

I'd be quite happy to add if you're not happy; go to Leeds/Reading, Global Gathering, Download or whatever specialist music festival you like.

Leeds is so much better and a real festival at that as well.

I think it's also a bit to do with the fact that there aren't really any purely 'pop' festivals now (apart from that funny t4 thing), and v is trying to half slip into that market too. also, charts these days are innundated with crossover type acts who are still 'manafactured' but know how to play a geetar, so there's going to be more acts like that at festivals, like v.

Your points are all completely valid bar Jamie T and Fountains of Wayne!!! There has been a marked increase, that can not be denied and while the pop has always been present, you're right, it was almost embarrassingly hidden away before where as now they shout loud and proud.

You're fully justified in your moaning, unfortunately while you'll find many others like you on here, I don't think you'll get more sympathy. In my eyes the festival has far worse problems than its lineup and I wont be joining my mates on the piss having a good time as I didn't have a good time last year (well not good enough to justify the cost/ effort anyway)
