Making a "Best of Springsteen" Mix CD for my mate...

Guest Ice Fatality

Recommended Posts

Well, I'm going to Glastonbury with my mate this year, and am a huge Springsteen fan myself, whereas the other lad says he will go see him for Born to Run, but doesn't know anything else by him, so I've offered to make him a mix CD with some good tracks (whether or not he's likely to play them :()... Just wondering if anyone has any other recommendations, apart from what I've already got:

- Thunder Road

- Glory Days

- My Lucky Day

- Born to Run

- Radio Nowhere

- Better Days

- Badlands

- Point Blank

- It's Hard To Be A Saint In The City

- The River

- Atlantic City

- Ghost of Tom Joad

- Devils & Dust

- The Wrestler

- For You

- Because The Night

- Because the Night

- Murder Incorperated

- Rosalita

- Backstreets

Aha, any other tracks I'm missing that you'd all consider essential? :D I had a bit of a hard time trying to cut down from the albums so went with obvious choices on most of them, and tried to ignore Tunnel of Love/Human Touch/Lucky Town as much as they deserve >_>

Cheers :(

Your song selection is as good as any. Many has suggested Live 75-85 as a good start, but who knows..

If I where you I would add a boot to the album tracks. It`s free and legal, and a fun and great listen. I think the Winterland boot is a excellent place to start.

All of this copyed from the Backstreet index.

Bruce Springsteen - Winterland Night

Winterland, San Francisco (CA), December 15, 1978

3 CD

Total time: 229:32

Download:

http://www.megaupload.com/de/?d=A6C8LE9I

Set List: Badlands / Streets Of Fire / Spirit In The Night / Darkness On The Edge Of Town / Factory / Promised Land / Prove It All Night / Racing In The Streets / Thunder Road / Jungleland / The Ties That Bind / Santa Claus / Fever / Fire / Candy's Room / Because The Night / Point Blank / Mona - She's The One / Backstreets / Rosalita / Born To Run / Detroit Medley / 10th Avenue Freeze Out / Raise Your Hand / Quarter To Three

Notes: Broadcast on KSAN in San Francisco, CA. The stretch run of the Darkness tour featured several differences from early in the tour, most notably Bruce's regular inclusion of "The Fever" and "Point Blank," as well as opening the second set with "The Ties That Bind." This show is another nomination for greatest show of all time, and another show with which you should start your collection. The performances of "Prove It All Night," "The Promised Land," and "Backstreets" are some of the best of all time. It was first released on CD by Great Dane Records as "Live in the Promised Land," and then Crystal Cat released their version called "Winterland Night," and the remasterer extraodinaire Prodigal Son released his version called "Prodigal Son at Winterland."

It should also be noted that this show was another of the early vinyl bootlegs, also called "Live in the Promised Land," but the source tape was from the broadcast and does not include the last two songs. By this time, Bruce knows that radio broadcasts really help the bootleg industry, and he dedicates "Racing in the Street" to all the guys on Kingsley and Ocean Avenues (along the Jersey Shore) who will hear this show "through the magic of bootlegging." This was Bruce's last radio broadcast until July 3, 1988.

I think your selection is fine. The point is with so many amazing songs to select from nobody can possibly do Bruce justice. So yours is as good as any IMHO.

That said,

hmmph

I'd never leave the following off any selection cd

Stolen Car [off main Tracks album]

or

The Promise [ off 18 Tracks album]

or

Racing in the Streets [off Live 75-84]

or

Jersey Girl [off Live 75-84]

Also for the uninitiated I'd throw in the likes of Janey Don't You Lose Heart and Seaside Bar Song off the main Tracks cd just to soften the gravitas of many of the big hitters. But that's just me.

And what about Land of Hope and Dreams off the Essential Bruce?

OK firstly Mr. Springsteen will be awsome at Glastonbury but really hope he plays his classics for the many people there who are not really into him - they have a real treat in store.

His best live performace are always

Jungleland (his best track ever!)

10th Ave Freeze Out (check out the version on Live in NY)

Born To Run

Jersey Girl

The River

Thunder Road

Should be on any Springsteen mixed CD

Other classics

Dylan's Chimes Of Freedom (b side to Spare Part)

Trapped (We are the world album + 3rd disc of Essential Springsteen)

American Land (Live in Dublin)

If I should fall behind (Live in Dublin)

Roll on June, hopefully Metallica will play also then we will have the two best live acts ever

I need to do the same thing for a couple of my mates as well. Think you've gotta go back to when you first discovered the boss and the songs that stood out straight away. Theres not enough born in the U.S.A for me cause that's pretty poptastic from start to finish.

Growing up - tracks acoustic version

Working on the highway - BIT USA

Downbound train - BIT USA

Dancing in the dark - BIT USA

Sad eyes - Tracks

The Rising

Aha, just looking at the tracklisting there Jens, could show him the live DVD I got with Born to Run... not got either of the tracks albums, sadly <_< , just his main studio ones, and downloaded Because The Night off iTunes earlier.

Also, left Jungleland off just 'cos that would've knocked the CD into "too long". Might actually make him 2 >_< And left off a lot of BITUSA becaue I'm not really a fan of the album (except for title track and glory days), and *everyone* knows the title track. Although might get round to getting the acoustic version of it at some point soon, that's well good.
