4th is a bit of an underestimation but unless their popularity dramatically increased they wouldnt headline. They never realy had the popularity in the uk or the legendary status to merit a headline slot at a mainstream uk festival. IM sure many would look forward to them reforming but it wouldnt be anticipated like a ratm or blur reunion.

They were 2nd in 2003, they have had 2 popular albums and BYOB (hugely popular single) since then, and more and more people have begun to like them...

Morrisey has also had succesfull singles and albums since 2nd headlining. So have kaiser chiefs but neither of them would move up the bill. You have to get to a certain level of popularity for the headline slot and soad never got there and i dont think they ever will. I have loads of friends not really in to indie/rock who have heard of smashing pumpkins and rage agsint the machine but wouldnt have heard of soad as they never really got the publicity here.

I have friends (who arent into indie at all) who like SOAD.

I have no friends who like smashing pumpkins.

I have more friends, in any group, that know who System of a Down are than Smashing Pumpkins.

So go figure.

I dont, in this country smashing pumpkins never fully made it. Their album sales were considerably weaker when compared to System of a Downs and if you believe that the current reading demographic is 18-24 then System of a Down comfortably trump Smashing Pumpkins in terms of popularity.
