Last time I complained about the horrible "stuffing face with spaghetti" ad, the thread disappeared quite fast!! To be fair to Neil, I guess in the current climate eFestivals can't exactly turn away advertising unless it's completely inappropriate (NME?!!), so I guess we'll just have to put up with it. Or click on it and buy some Cornflakes!!

If you have firefox you can download a free ad-blocker.

I did it a few months ago and not seen an advert round these parts since. :D

and very soon you won't be seeing these forums at all if you're blocking ads. ;-)

Without these forums earning their keep they'll be gone. And they ain't earning their keep, so things are being done.

Very soon (hopefully later today, am currently working on it ... but it might be tomorrow) they'll be the option to have these forums ad-free for the payment of a small subscription fee.

There is no suchn thing as a free lunch however much you might like to think there is. :D

Why not just charge more for ads. Surely you'll get your usual invasion of thousands of boardies come April and running through the summer?

oh, yes, those advertisers are just queuing up to spunk away money they don't have to, particularly in a recession, which likes all recessions hits advertising far more than any other single area of business. :P

There are much better ways of making money out of a website than showing completely irrelevant ads.

As you're the expert, I offer you a job on bringing in all that extra non-advertising income on a commission basis. I'll expect your confirmation of acceptence imminently.

Alternatively, you don't have the first idea what you're talking about. :P

Do you make more advertising revenue if we click on the adds??

If so a couple of clicks a day by everybody here would get the money rolling in.

the ads are a variety of payment methods - pay-per-view, pay-per-click, and pay-per-0transaction, so clicking on them won't necessarily earn this site extra money directly, but will make advertisers look on the ads they place here as more effective than they currently are.

Thats a very negative attitude. You have some people on here who are the perfect market market for say, camping accessories (which you do advertise). Special K however, is not relevant to most people on here so that ad is totally useless.

Taxi cab companies

Coach hire

Car hire

Tried any of those?

By the way, the recession is a perfect reason to advertise effectively. As a business, people dont come to you during a recession.

I have one of the biggest media houses in the country (and probably the biggest in the entertainment area) sourcing the ads for this site. If they can't get enough relevant ads (and they can't, not even in the good times) then it's likely that no one could.

The likes of the special k ad isn't being run in place of any sort of 'better' ad - it's being run in place of no ad at all.

Today I've had the ad-revenue report for February, which was down around 25% on February last year. There was also around 15% fewer paid-for ads run during February. If that downturn continues right thru the year then efests is f**ked and won't be here this time next year.

While it's true that those businesses that maintain their advertising spend during a recession are those that ride out the recession the best, it's also the case that they have to have the funds to be able to maintain thqat advertising spend. When many of the world's biggest companies are deeply in the shit, it's extremely clear that there's simply not the money around for advertising spends to be able to be maintained however much a companty might like to maiontain them.

So please play the game folks, and add exceptions to your ad-blockers to allow ads to display from this site - it simply is the case of do it or lose it.

I look forward to hearing about the subscription option. If the price is right, I'll sign up. :D

the only thing that's stopping me offering it right now is trying to get an accurate handle on what the charge should be for that option.

I obviously don't want to over-price, but similarly, if I under-price I might as well put the gun to my head right now. :P
