Good quality waterproof jacket

Guest Homer

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I've messed around with various crappy things in the past but now just want to get a decent waterproof coat for festivals. So does anyone know:

a) a reliable make or model that is actually waterproof?

;) anywhere with a decent sale on/deals?

I'm happy to spend £30 to £60, is that realistic?

Cheers!

I have berghaus boots and jacket

this jacket:-

except mine has elestacated cuffs, it has protected me in the greatest of downpoors is light, can be easily stowed in a bag or around your waist and the hood folds in to the collar - fantastic

My boots are amazing too, the boots didn't leak once, even when having to carry an unconcious mate through mud of Friday 2005 from Fatboy Slim (Other Stage) to our tents (Kidney Mead) through whatever was in our way, unable to cherry pick a route through the mud we just went through whatever was in out path!

Berghaus all the way!

Yeah thats realistic but with online prices rather then shop ones. I work in an outdoor store and while our gear is quality - gooutdoors often have the same for a much better price.

The Berghaus RG1 Jacket is fully waterproof and breathable and the website Niblet recommended has it at the cheapest price I've seen it.

(for ladies the same jacket is the Calisto - gooutdoors have it for £54.99 (and had the insulated version for £39.99 - though I imagine that has sold out by now!)

It's an excellent shell - but that's all it is. If you want insulation as well you're better off going for a 3 in 1 or a North Face insulated jobbie.

Craghopper have a 3 in 1 (wearable as shell, wearable as fleece, wearable as warm waterproof jacket) for £79.99 on gooutdoors - it's a good jacket if your budget will stretch to it.

Blacks have some good deals on at the moment - again online will be cheaper then instore.

This technicals one is an excellent price - £49.99 - waterproof, breathable, insulated

The Berghaus packlites are amazing - packaways using Gore Tex are the only ones I would trust - the basic ones, like the Peter Storm ones only last for about half an hour in the rain, then they lose the will to live.

i have a north face pair of overtrousers they are good quality but ive only ever wore them in snow. if i was to need to wear them in summer id imagine id only wear shorts underneath though doubt they have enough ventilation even though the fabric is breathable.

also another thing to look out for is the length of the zips if there is on the bottom of the trousers. longer zips make it easier to take them off while wearing shoes.

Can't really go wrong with an Army Surplus goretex jacket. I got mine from ebay for £15 or so delivered, brand new. My girlfriend also has one (about £25).

Generally can be found for £30 or so, 100% waterproof and you can hide and no one will be able to see you (it's camo)

You should try TK Maxx, as they sell named goods at discount prices. I got a good jacket from there that survived a very wet west wales and kept me dry all week! Plus it rolls up really small, always a bonus!

After using waterproof coats and trousers for years (i used to do grounds maintenance) I used a ponchoand I would rate it over the waterproofs anyday as you dont get hot it folds down and if it is not raining but still wet you can use as a place to sit.

Agreed on a poncho. I once sat in a storm in front of the Pyramid (can't remember who I was watching but they must have been worth it). Got out my camping chair to keep off the wet ground, arranged the poncho to envelop the chair and me and was perfectly dry.
