The UK's finest metal event, DAMNATION FESTIVAL, will return to Leeds this October following the sold-out success of last year's showcase.

The festival - voted the 'Best Event of 2008' in Britain by readers of Terrorizer Magazine - will be hosted at Leeds University Union, on Saturday, October 24.

And with a longer day planned, more bands and fewer clashes between the three stages it promises to be the biggest and most exciting edition yet.

Festival Director Gavin McInally said: "Each year we've strengthened the event and improved the line-up and the fans have supported us from our daunting first year at Jilly's in Manchester to a sold out 3,500 capacity day of metal mayhem in Leeds which witnessed the triumphant return of Carcass in November.

"To try to re-pay that support, this year doors will open from 1pm which will allow more bands across our three diverse stages and where we can, we will avoid clashes to allow fans to get the most out of the day.

"As always the tickets will be kept to a bare minimum cost although there will be no expense spared in dragging the best in death, thrash, grind, black, doom, experimental and straight-up heavy rock and metal from across the globe to take the stage at Damnation."

"With an exciting UK comeback show, death metal favourites, post-rock genius and a heavy dose of rock action already on the cards, it's going to be quite a line-up."

Damnation Festival - which is proudly sponsored by Jagermeister, Terrorizer and Rock Sound magazine - will take place on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Leeds University Union.

Tickets will be available from all usual outlets including See, Ticketline and Leeds Tickets.

Northern Irish trio THERAPY? kick-start the line-up for Damnation Festival with a heavy dose of alternative rock.

And they'll be joined by Greek black metallers ROTTING CHRIST - who will appear exclusively at the Leeds-based event - and Josh Graham's doom laden post-metal purveyors A STORM OF LIGHT.

It's an exciting treble coup for UK's finest metal event but only the start of what will be the festival's biggest and most diverse line-up to date.

Festival director Gavin McInally said: "It's a real honour to have Therapy? perform at Damnation Festival, especially in a busy year for band following the release of the excellent Crooked Timber.

"Fans have been demanding Therapy? for a while now and we're delighted to finally be able to oblige with a slot on the Jagermeister Stage.

"Rotting Christ are another fans' favourite and they've been kind enough to agree to a break from the studio this October to fly over to devastate our Terrorizer Stage.

"And following the massive success of our Rock Sound Stage last year, A Storm of Light are the first band announced to push the aural envelope with their eclectic post-metal rumblings."

Damnation Festival 2009 will take place on Saturday, October 24 at Leeds University Union, across three stages with doors opening at the earlier time of 1pm through until 3am.

Details of tickets will be announced soon.

MISTRESS - the UK's finest purveyors of flithy noise - will reunite for one last aural assault, exclusively at DAMNATION FESTIVAL.

The Birmingham bastards will treat fans a final dose their sludgey mix of grind and thrash following their sudden break-up in March last year.

The show will be the first time Mistress have (dis)graced Damnation since 2006 when they levelled the Terrorizer Stage - leading to fans repeatedly demanding their return - and the last time they'll perform anywhere.

And frontman Dave Hunt is planning to make it one for the history books.

He said: "Well, we saw what happened with Carcass and we thought we'd cash in too!

"Nah, in reality it's just that we never had a 'last gig' and that left a sense of unfinished business. Our paragraph in the book of heavy metal should have ended with an exclamation mark, not a comma.

"The Damnation guys suggested a one-off and we thought f**k it, we'll have our final stand after all. The last grinding hurrah of blood, snot and spleen."

Mistress will join previously announced acts; THERAPY?, ROTTING CHRIST and A STORM OF LIGHT at the three stage event which will take place on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Leeds University Union.

Northern Irish post-metallers STAND-UP GUY have also been added to the bill, playing the Rock Sound endorsed stage.

FANS' favourites ENTOMBED and AKERCOCKE will terrorise Damnation Festival after being voted the top two acts to return to UK's finest metal event.

The show will mark a UK Exclusive date for Swedish death 'n' roll titans Entombed who headlined the Terrorizer Stage at the inaugural Damnation Festival in 2005.

While the UK's finest progressive death purveyors Akercocke return after topping the same stage in Manchester in 2006.

Festival director Gavin McInally said: "It's always a coup to land great bands but when they are the bands the fans have requested time and time again and even voted for, it's all the more satisfying to have them back.

"Entombed were phenomenal in our first year and for many Akercocke were the band of the day in 2006 so there's no doubt they'll be sterling additions to the fifth Damnation Festival."

Damnation Festival - voted the UK's best metal event in 2008 - returns to Leeds on Saturday, October 24, 2009 promising to deliver its finest chapter yet.

They may not have 'issues', but the festival's bands definitely had something to shout about, if you could find them - nobody seemed to know where anything was. Trying to find the Jaeger, Terroriser or Rock Sound stages when the rooms were named 'Mine' and 'Stylus' was quite a challenge, especially as none of the bouncers seemed to know where the main room was. The queues from one room to the next were longer than the queue to actually get in the place.

Sadly, our massive signs directing people to the stages proved to be too tempting for peope not to steal, extra big step ladders will be taken to prevent the same issue this year.

Security are supplied and briefed by the venue, but them not being aware that the stages had different names is something that will be rectified this year.

So, onto business, who else do people want to see?

DAMNATION FESTIVAL is proud to announce experimental metallers JESU as the headliner of the devastatingly eclectic Rock Sound Stage.

And the diverse bill will be round off by rising Belfast post-rock outfit AND SO I WATCH YOU FROM AFAR and England's brightest post-metal hope, RINOA.

Jesu will top the bill which already includes This Will Destroy You, A Storm of Light, Minsk, Manatees and Stand-Up Guy.

Rock Sound editor Darren Taylor said: “We’re psyched about this year’s line-up on the Rock Sound stage – Damnation and Rock Sound have brought together some of the most innovative and exciting bands you’ll see playing on the same stage.

"We’ve been long-term fans of Jesu, so it’s an honour to have them headline our stage this year.”

Festival Director Gavin McInally added: "It's no secret we've wanted Jesu at Damnation for years so it's fitting that they are finally available to headline our strongest yet Rock Sound stage which is crammed with experimental rock and metal talent.

"Some fans don't believe post-rock has a place at a metal event but the hundreds of ticket buyers who packed in to watch the likes of *Shels, Latitudes and Moutains Becames Machines last year felt otherwise so we're delighted to be able to push the envelope further this year.

"With this year's solid line-up the Rock Sound Stage is an event in its own right and we're sure that for many fans it will be the place to be all day."

Damnation Festival will take place at Leeds University Union, on Saturday, October 24, 2009.

DORSET doom heavyweights ELECTRIC WIZARD will level the Jagermeister Stage at this year's Damnation Festival.

And the UK standard-bearers of crushing, down-tempo metal will be joined by the Conan-inspired slabs of doom delivered by Indianapolis' GATES OF SLUMBER.

The skull-scrapingly heavy combo are added to a bill which already includes Therapy?, Destruction, Jesu, Rotting Christ and Akercocke across three stages which will take place at Leeds University Union on Saturday, October 24.

Festival director Gavin McInally said: "From the very first Damnation Festival, Electric Wizard have been continually requested by the fans and after five years of borderline harassment, we're delighted that they'll finally play what promises to be a bowel shuddering set.

"It's also a pleasure to host the return to UK soil of Gates Of Slumber who'll bring their old-school crushing doom offerings to the Terrorizer Stage."

GRINDCORE supergroup LOCK UP will headline this year's Terrorizer Stage in what will be their only show of 2009 and likely the band's last ever live appearance.

The almost mythical extreme metal behemoth - which will feature At The Gates frontman Tomas Lindberg, Anton Resisenegger of Pentagram and Criminal on guitar, Napalm Death bassist Shane Embury and ex-Dimmu Borgir and Testament drummer Nick Barker - will perform live in the UK for the first time in almost ten years.

And Shane Embury revealed the one-off show is set to be the last time they ever take the stage together.

He said: "LOCK UP has not played the UK since the summer of 2000 when we did a small tour with Poland's Decapitated - in fact the band has only ever done around 15 shows since we formed ten years ago.

"We have had so many requests over the years from fans to play again that we thought 'let's get off our arses and do this one last time'.

"So our appearance at this years Damnation Festival will be a total "7 Churches on vinyl or f**k off!" exclusive show.

"This may well be the last show the band plays, ever, so don't miss out on what I hope will be a night to be remembered!"

Nick Barker added: "Damnation will also mark the live debut of new guitarist Anton Resenegger from the Chilean underground death metal legends Pentagram and Anglo/Chilean death/thrash band Criminal.

"Resisenegger replaces the late Jesse Pintado who sadly passed away in August 2006."

Damnation Festival will take place at Leeds University Union, on Saturday, October 24, 2009.

The line-up so far is: Lock Up, Therapy?, Destruction, Electric Wizard, Jesu, Rotting Christ, This Will Destroy You, Akercocke, A Storm of Light, Mistress, Negura Bunget, Minsk, Extreme Noise Terror, Manatees, Gates of Slumber, And So I Watch You From Afar, Charger, Stand-Up Guy and Rinoa with more bands to be announced.
