For anyone who is really concerned about security of valuable items (cash, cards, phones etc) you might want to consider buying a portable safe (not as daft as it sounds!) - these are available from Maplins for just £15.

All you need to do is secure the cable to something - either a tent-pole or something like a spiral dog tether that's screwed into the ground (some slight modification will be needed to 'close the gap')

Both items for less than £20 - "owt's better than nowt!"

I totally agree with the free lockups, however the intention was for temporary, overnight storage.

Imagine the scenario.......you stagger back to your tent at the end of the day and realise you've still got your cash, mobile phone & camera in your pocket - what are you going to do? Stagger back to one of the lockups? Put them in a sock & sleep with them in your sleeping bag (where you can roll over & crush something)? or leave them out and hope no thieving git comes into your tent whilst you're in a drunken sleep?

The dog tether would be screwed into the floor inside a tent porch, as close to the bedroom as possible - the anchor cable would then feed into the bedroom area - how is this drawing attention to valuables? Nothing would be visible from outside the tent & during the day you would leave the safe open to show any would-be thief that there is nothing to be stolen

Different tents will have different scenarios.

Not ever tent pole can be easily lifted - the vast majority yes, but some no.

The vast majority would use the dog tether.

If you look at the internal dimensions [17cm(d) x 13cm(w) x 8cm(h)] surely you'd realise that I'm not advocating this for general use?!?!

You really think so? I've been using these for a long time with my dogs (a rotty & a german shepherd) who pull like feck on them for hours on end without the slightest movement.

If you're planning on camping with the efest brigade on pennards I'll offer you a challenge Dava - I'll bring a tether & screw it into the ground - if you can pull it out of the ground within 2 mins (your average thief will scarper after 2 mins if they are unable to get something) I'll buy you 5 pints - if (or really i mean when) you don't succeed, you buy me 5 instead! :ph34r:

Remember, i'm only advocating this as a temporary solution for overnight storage when people are in their tent - the exertion of trying to pull this out of the ground would be rather noisy & therefore wake most people!

Yes they are like a big corkscrew - the vast majority are about 2 & half foot long, with the spiral being 2 foot & the bit above ground being 6 inches. You can get longer ones too.

They are a b@st@rd to screw in & out with just your hands - the first foot is generally ok but once you get further down you have to use something through the handle bit as a lever.

They are also ideal as anchor point for tents/gazebos in high wind situations, but again, you need something lever-ish to screw them in

You'll find most safes are of a sufficient weight to prevent lifting. This one? Well, it'll make carrying your stuff away easier for anyone who found it.

You could dig it out with a tent-peg in seconds.

Use lockups or just be sensible and keep everything of value on you at all times. Sleep with stuff in the bottom of the sleeping bag..

I think you have a point.

The corkscrew would be a bitch to get out of the ground and the safe would be attached and yes you are right, if a thief cant get at something pretty quick they tend to give up...this is why they tend to be "opportunists"

Carrying the tether could be a pain in the ass if it really is that big and I know now if I saw someone walking with one through the site...this is what I would be thinking of given animals are not allowed.

I wouldn't try getting one of those out of the ground with no sure way of knowing what it was I was putting all my effort into.

Its a deterrant. Realistically, i cant see anyone even bothering when there is a million other tents to rob from.

Just a thought.
