I actually noticed that you were older after I posted even better (for me lol!!!!). I was lucky my mates older brother used to take us when we were still at school. I sort of drifted a little from rock in the early - mid nineties for a few years and missed the last few MORs. Fancied Download before but this year there are loads of bands I want to see - and not just the nostalgia ones on the Sunday!!!!!

I'll def see ZZ Top and probably Def Lep for old times sake but I've no real interest in seeing Whitesnake again. Hated them pretty much since 87 and they were awful in 90. On the nostalgia front Doro Pesch has been gigging and Warlock were the forst band I ever saw at Donnington so thatd be a good trip down memory lane for me if she was booked!!

They sure did!

I think Im older than both of you :D

My first festival was Reading, either 80 or 81 (cant' remember but if it was 1980 that means I've seen a few bands I didn't know I'd seen... ) and my first MOR was 1981..

AC/DC

Whitesnake

Blue Öyster Cult

Slade

Blackfoot

More

Tommy Vance (DJ)

It rained, and rained, it was the first time I'd seen bin bags worn as ponchos. It was muddy! Slade were brilliant, AC/DC were amazing as always. We got the coach from Victoria, it left Donington on time (ie as AC/DC came on - you think I was gonna miss them?!?!) and we got left behind, along with LOTS of others. People walking up to the M1, trying to hitch a lift, people going off into the fields, trying to build shelters... we got talking to some people who lived near us while we were hitching on the M1 roundabout, they lived about 5 miles from us. Their dad made the 2 hour drive up to collect them and very kindly collected us as well, he had 5 of us in his car in the end...... My mum was livid - I was only just 16, hadn't got around to mentioning to her we were stuck miles & miles from home...

Somehow from that I developed a real passion for festivals - and having a driving licence and a car!!! :)

Yes festival going was a different experience in those days! The first few Donningtons I went to my mates big brother drove us down in his crappy old yellow vauxhall cavalier - how it ever got from Edinburgh to Donnington is a miracle!! Obviously tje biggest panic my parents had was in 88 when the deaths at Donnington occured. Younger people dont realise that with no mobile phones, internet etc that the news trickled through and that when we left Donnington there were rumours of injuries but we didnt know how serious and certainly didnt know there had been deaths and that they had been reported on national tv. Hence when I got home on Sunday covered in mud I was met by 2 very concerned parents!

I also remember being at Reading around this time when MeatLoaf got hit square in the face with a bottle and stormed off stage. Also that year the singer from Shy took a swig out of a bottle of what he thought was cider that had been launched onstage - of course it wasnt cider it was erm bodily fluids!

Same as I went with my Dad as it was my 1st one and no one else wanted to go.Being just the 2 of us my Mum thought the worst. We went by train to Victoria coach to Leicester then hitch hicked to Donnington. No tent no change of clothes nothing arrived late Friday night.Slept under a hedge with a piece of plastic tarpaulin we found. Then the same home on Sunday.Told my Mum we got a lift both ways.I had the time of my life and still have very fond memories of the time. ;)

No way I would do that nowdays though! ;)
