a short while ago, an automated bot attacked these forums, and used them to try and promote via the personal message system a particular website, based in russia.

As soon as this was spotted, the personal messages were deleted.

So if you've had a personal message notification but you have no personal message, this is the reason why.

Apologies for any inconvenience. We've taken a number of actions which we hope should stop similar happening again.
