Favourite Summer Songs

Okay - I've been contemplating starting this thread for the best part of 10 minutes but didn't in fear of being shot down. However, I've now discovered enough bottle to do it... :)

As I am every night - I'm sat on Spotify following links of related artists and the like and going on a wonderful, magical journey through music to try and discover some new (but generally old) bands to make my musical life more complete.

Tomorrow morning I'm off on holiday (to Spain - yes it is relevant) and I was thinking to myself - what better than lying in the sun listening to some classic "summer" rock songs. :)

So I was just hoping for some inspiration (because by no means do I claim to be aware of all the great rock songs to have been released) in terms of what everyone's favourite summer songs are.

The criteria the songs should fulfill (making it relevant to glastonbury) are; it should be the sort of song that you think would be perfect on a beautiful summer afternoon, cider in hand and everyone smiling. :)

So basically, which songs (let's say 5) would be perfect in your eyes for a beautiful afternoon at glastonbury - the sort of songs that really get you in a summer-mood. :)

Fans and California Waiting by Kings of Leon always remind me of perfect summer days spent at festivals, a leisurely drive down a shady rural road, or sunbathing at the local lake...which are the quintessential summer moments for me. I had a whole playlist of songs that captured that feeling...but sadly it disappeared with my last ipod.

My friends and I listened to a ton of White Stripes on a cross country roadtrip to my families beach house in Florida a few summers ago, so most of the tracks of De Stijl remind me of that.

Oooh, and the Guillemots "Trains to Brazil," that one is absolutely perfection.

This is going to be a very Wisconsin-centric one, and it's not technically a song...but being it is opening of baseball season this week in the US, I was just thinking of it.

Bob Uecker's voice IS summer for me. I hear it and I instantly thinking of sitting out on the deck with my dad as he grilled dinner, I read a book, and we listened to the Brewers on the radio together. Hell, my roommate was watching Major League the other day and I thought I smelled brats downstairs...strange what the mind can do with linking together the senses...

I think it's Buffalo Springfield, the one that goes "stop children what's that sound/everybody look what's going down.." that one.

and Violent Femmes Blister in the Sun

Good call on the Undertones, i love that tune! It was in an advert a while back wasn't it with some Goth kids at the fairground, or going surfing or something?

Summer Breeze - The Isley Brothers.

Summertime - Janis Joplin's version is best I'd say.

Here comes the Sun - The Beatles. Natch.

Summer Days - Bob Dylan.

Sunsine of your Love - Stevie Wonder

Summer in the City - The Spoonful

Something in the Air - Thunderclap Newman

Oh Happy Day - Edwin Hawkins

I've decided to listen to Summertime by Janis now. Best female vocalist ever.
