How is the sound?

Other Stage can be quite good.

Pyramid Stage is mostly a disaster, any wind at all and the sound gets blown all over the place.

Some of the tents are ok-ish, however on the whole and compared to other festivals/venues, the sound is total shit.

the sound obviously depends on where you're standing. it's physically impossible to have great sound at every point in front of a stage like the Pyramid or Other stage. I remember having a particularly bad time with the sound at Arcade Fire in 2007... in fact I've never got on with the Other Stage. But the Pyramid always seems good to me -- I normally stand about a third of the way up the hill for the big acts, and it sounds good up there, probably because you can hear both sets of speakers. I mean, if you think abotu it, the sound's always goign to be best if you're standing just in front of the sound man

Anyway, I find that cider and ecstasy smooth the sound out pretty well.

the only problem i have seen/heard is 2007 when arctics was playing dizzy rascal came on and i couldn't hear him at all, killers seemed fine for me i was quite near the front slightly right of the stage and heard the full set no problems, i cant remember any sound problems in 2008 and i saw a lot of the pyramid sets from the back sat of the grass and heard them all perfectly but they have got speakers in a big arch dotted along across the rear of the field which has now reminded me of my mate last year who was there for the first time

mate - im going to the toilet

me - do you want me to come with you so you dont get lost

mate - me get lost how daft do you think i am i will just look for the speaker tower your near

hour and a half passes

mate looking worce for wear dripping with sweat - theres f**king loads of them speakers

I think The Other Stage might usually be good for headliners because the field is full. Mid afternoon the wind can blow the sound all over the place.

Other than specifically when one side of the stage wenrt down in 2007, I've always thought the sound is fine. If you can't get near the front though, up the hill behind the back set of speakers is far better than anywhere halfway between.

Just noticing the other thread title as I clicked into this - the sound at the John Peel doesn't carry to the outskirts of the tent at all. If theres someone you want to see on there, get there early.

I have to say I must be deaf, because people everywhere constantly seem to be harping about bad sound, but I always think it's fine, unless you know, you can't hear anything.

Sure the sound's not as good as at ATP, where everything is indoors and turned up to 11, but it's pretty good for a festival of its size I've found.

Especially compared to the main stage at Reading, where everytime the wind blows, the sound cuts completely and all you can hear is bass booming from the dance tent (Reading goer 2002-2006)

I've always enjoyed good sound at both main stages - but maybe as I'm not a sound engineer myself, I don't know what's good or bad. If I were to choose a favourite though it would be the Other stage, especially when there's a good dance act on like Fat Boy/Chemicals/Orbital etc. The sound seems to fill the field very well. Even when I've been watching from afar on the railway track the sound is still great. I guess the flatness of the field helps the sound travel further (does that tie in with the science of it all? I don't know).

Where you stand can make a lot of difference. Generally in front of the sound desk is pretty good.

Jazz World is usually very good, Pyramid variable and can be affected by wind, Acoustic mixed - often depends on the band.
