Keef
Has anyone arrived on the Friday evening before? Me and most of our group are getting there Wednesday but one bloke (A Glasto Virgin too!) has a training course he has to attend that finishes at 5:30pm on the Friday. In Northampton. He's now thinking of a refund. Bad times. But I think we can persuade him that it'll still be worth arriving on Friday night. Good times. There must be a fair number of people who don't/can't take the Friday off work and arrive on Friday evening... but the site is normally pretty much full at that point so it can't be that many? can it? So is he going to get a smooth (relatively) traffic free arrival to the site at around 8:30pm? Or will the masses that couldn't take the day off be big enough to make hours of queuing a necessity? Personally I've had the time booked off since October as this is my stag do, so I'll be there Wednesday morning. But has anyone here arrived on the Friday? sungubala
This year I can only get there for Friday lunchtime I've just realised. I've never come to the festival at this time before - what will the traffic be like around the site? Not at the public car parks and entrances, but in the roads surrounding the site? Tugger2k
ive done it once - and although theres still traffic, no where near what it like the previous 2 days
ciderboy
thing is though he's missing arguably the best 2 days imo, settin up in empty field and wanderin round when its fairly quiet but if it cant be helped so be it

grrrraeme
It used to be I'd feel pity for those arriving Friday evening fully loaded with kids in tow searching for a space to pitch their tent. Now its on the Thursday evening I feel that.
dj267
yep, to repeat the absolutely key info in the above posts is that one of you must pitch his tent for him. Other than that, swarm swarm swarm!!! he will get a smaller amount of brilliance, but it will still be brilliant!
Keef
Thanks, all good info, keep it coming - I might just point him in the direction of this thread. I think the promise of a pre-pitched tent and minimal traffic on the way in might just swing it, we'll have to see what he says. It's a training course for a new job so he has to show willing, I know he'll love it though, just need to convince him! Dontcha just love taking virgins along? I've got 4 going with me this year and 6 old schoolers - can't wait!!

ramragon
yeah, same as everyone else, i felt pity for those people looking round on friday for somewhere to put their tent, the paths had turned to mush and anything within 10 foot of the paths was in danger of getting trampled on. take your mates tent for him and put it up when you arrive next to yours, at least that way it will save loads of hassle
Spider43
For a variety of reasons I arrived at midday friday last year - Traffic no problem and wasn't too bad getting set up. I camped up by the Park which actually turned into a really good spot. As long as you set up for him all he needs to do is turn up, dump his bag and get on it. He should definitely do it! Laura_Babs
I would say it is still worth arriving but don't under estimate how different it is turning up once everything is up and busy and especially if its dark. My friend (Glasto virgin) arrived in the dark and rain on the Thursday night last year and really struggled to get her bearings after that as she didn't have the first two days of getting used to things empty and seeing them build up. Make sure one of your group is willing to meet your friend when he does arrive and that that person listens out for their mobile as it may be difficult to plan what time he is going to arrive. I would say try and meet him near the gate he comes in at. We met our friend in front of the Pyramid stage but obviously not really an option as there is music on at that time on a Friday! I hope he comes and has a great time!

grumpyhack
Half a loaf is better than none. He'll still get a chance to see the site and sights and get a flavour of why it's the best fest in the world. As he's a virgin I just hope he can find you or maybe you should meet him at an agreed entrance.
idontgetoutmuch
hey I've been going to Glast since 2002, and two of our group are teachers, so arriving after school on Fri, (and sadly, returning on Sunday evening) is normal for them. In fact it didn't even seem that odd our first few Glasts as we usually got there on the Thursday, so they were only a day behind. Now of course with Wednesday being the new Thursday, it seems that somone doing this is missing half the festival. I'm really excited for your mate, arriving mid madness will be so much fun! Meeting him at the gate is essential, as is getting him 'on it' I take it someone will have set up his tent for him? It might be worth considering putting his rucksack in the lock ups until the bands have finished, esp if there is a 'must see' band as he arrives. Have a totally failsafe backup plan for meeting him that doesn't rely upon mobile phones - coverage is so much better these days, but I'd want a backup. At least he doesn't have to leave early on the Sunday! And of course he should go!!!!!
robith
It's not ideal BUT I've been to festivals where I couldn't leave work until the end of Friday. There reallis something for wandering around a festival thinking "An hour ago I was at work!" - it puts you in an incredible mood and nothing can get you down.
