MissB
Yeah, it still is a wicked stage I can't fault it in any other way.. I just miss the chilled outness of it... I think they should move Brothers.. Controversial!
Mahdnyw
snip Plus then we could get the 2 litre bottles back
plaskins
I know they used the litter excuse to pull the 2 litre bottles, but apparently it was more to do with a request from the authorities to reduce binge drinking.

whisty
Yes bring the 2L back & put the Bar somewhere quieter - sounds like a plan. Or at least more bins & cattle prods to make people use them. The drink/food mess around that area is a real eyesore/shame. np: Gil Scott-Heron - Gun - [Live at Glastonbury June 22,86 Edited February 17, 2010 by whisty
MissB
I think Brothers have made enough profit now over the years with them being stocked by retailers and their increasing popularity to increase the size of their pitch and have a seated bar area... maybe if it has to still be in Jazzworld for traditions sake, over the other side, away from stage front. where the other bar with the garden bit is..by the cut through to Avalon.. they could share that seating area too... or if it can be moved a big brothers tent in Pyramid/other stage... even better. I'm almost certain they had a seated tent at Bestival in 2008.. and a smaller bar elsewhere...
norainplease
I seem to remember reading something from Brothers saying that they would love have a bigger bar/more bars but they only have one outside bar, but I could be imagining that!! I know what people mean about the litter in the Jazz World field and I really hope that they do have more bins there this year. I think that the idea of a skip behind the sound stage is a really good one but it may have something to do with fire risk that they don't have one there.....one ciggie end in a skip full of plastic/paper cups/plates and it would make a mighty mess - not such a big mess if it's just a wee bin! Also I don't know why people think it is okay to drop their bloody cups on the ground anyway it's not like they weight a ton of anything in fact I saw some guys walking about the Jazz World last year with a huge tower of brothers cups about two meters tall!! Needless to say they were very p**sed!!

amfy
On the Wednesday or Thursday night last year we were making little campfires with them and the stewards kept coming and putting them out by stamping on them. Everyone was just booing playfully and relighting them as soon as they moved on, until the stewards got serious and just came with a massive bucket of water causing us all to scatter - semi drenched! I thought it was quite a good way of keeping the litter down, and it's something that always goes on in the pyramid field, but now i think about it, the level of cup litter from brothers bar does create a serious fire hazard because of the serious risk of it spreading right across the whole cup carpet! FunkyDenz
I wouldn't mind picking up a load of the Brother's cups whilst listening to a live jazz performance in the summer sunshine, might shame some of those who drop them in to tidying up after themselves. tinners
I think Brother's should offer an incentive, bring back a big stack of cups and get a free cider
Mahdnyw
Great idea. Money or cider back for returned bottles or cups. Even if it's 5p a cup you'd still get kids picking them up. Maybe also ban the carry out trays that get everywhere or if all that fails, make the Brothers' stand responsible for keeping the area around their pitch tidy. Of course people could just get responsible about what they do with their own rubbish but as it seems to get worse every year...

Bort
At Coachella, you can trade in ten empty bottles of water for a new one, which really helps with the litter.
MissB
yeah that works really well at reading/V although the best cup scheme by a mile is latitudes, not sure it would work at a fest 7x the size tho

Tugger2k
This has recently been discussed in detail on another (non festy) forum I'm on. The problem did appear to be scale. Regs means they have to give you a new cup each time. The used cups can only be processed (i.e. washed) in Germany. So you need enough for the whole festival. My estimate was 5 million. They come in flight cases of 226 each. Rough number of bars = 20, so average stock would be 1000 flight cases per bar to last the whole festival. Our friendly WBC worker reckoned it would be a struggle to store them behind the bars, and I'm fairly sure that last year Melvin Benn spoke of environmental concerns with the cost of shipping to and from Germany (vs. using locally sourced 'normal' cups that can be recycled). MissB
I agree with the scale issue, unlike other festivals Glastonbury isn't sponsored and has many smaller traders on site that couldn't afford to and probably don't need to do this. Mainly I was just suggesting it for Brothers.. but you could have this scheme for Brothers and the WBC bars surely? As the biggies with the majority of cup litter? Just a thought. norainplease
I think it would work for Brothesr though.. a nice pint sized Glastonbury themed plastic Brothers mug to keep forever that they refill for you. You leave it you can only have more cider if you pay for another... couldn't cost more for them then the packs they send out every year? I'm guessing this wont happen though as profits might drop.. paulo999
thats bonkers - how can the cups 'only' be washed in germany it must be possible to find a local facility
paulo999
I think that's an ace idea I would definately pay for a plastic brothers cup for festy vibes all year round! It would be doable I think if you charge £2 or so a cup then gave 10p on something off a pint if you refill? It would save them buying so many paper cups to take with them? norainplease
Illegal to refill. Remember the days when the old boys in a pub had their personal tankard behind the bar? Those days are gone.
