rucksack size

I wouldn't buy cheap.

Picture the scene you've arrived at Glastonbury, your excited, you've gone through the ticket exchange and got your wristband, your walking to the campsite and your rucksack splits.

I know its unlikely and an extreme scenario, but it would be f**king horrible. Also if you want to go backpacking or traveling its worth getting one that will last. I spent £90 on mine, its big and comfy and almost certainly will not break.

My dad bought one for £100 and something pounds in the early 80's and he still uses the same one so its worth splashing out a bit.

I use a Karrimor that my Dad used to take hiking in the 70s. Still going strong; goes to show it's worth paying for quality.

The key to carrying lots of weight is to support it on your waist, not your shoulders - so make sure the rucksack you get has a decent waist strap (assuming you have a waist, that is!). When you walk you can lean forward a bit, so the weight is centred over your legs. The shoulder straps are then only there to prevent the whole thing toppling backwards.

Don't buy online without trying one on first (or check for a suitable returns policy and leave plenty of time).

I don't pack all that light (although I draw the line at carrying beer in) - I'm pretty mobile with the rucksack, tent in one hand, sleeping bag in the other.

This year bought a more solid load carrier - a godsend if you have a long trek , its hard work otherwise
