Disappointed with headliners so far?

Come on children, settle down. Surely Glasto is supposed to be a festival about open minds and that opens minds.

You'll get who you are given and all the arguing at this stage won't change the line up.

So you either go with an open mind and may be pleasantly surprised or, if you are so certain that you won't enjoy it cash in your ticket and let someone go who has not been lucky enough to get one.

I've never been anything but pleasantly surprised at Glasto, whether by oldie bands who turned out to be superb (e.g. Leonard Cohen aged 73 last year) or by unknown (to me) bands that I've since got into.

P.S. It's great to have a thread that's got Neil's dander up!

it's just that most young people are lazy, selfish, impatient and spoilt these days. If things don't go exactly the way they want they will bitch and moan and complain that it's not fair. To hell with what anyone else wants, they must have things the way they want it. And they must have it NOW! see also the way they complain about not having the full line up announced yet. They demand to know it and cannot cope with not getting things their own way. I'd hate to be part of that generation. Horrible, horrible individulas.

It's not their fault, it's the crappy society we now live in.

personally, i think all of that is b*llocks. im 18 and so are all my friends, wer all going to glasto ( around 16 of us ) and we all love the headliners. Your perception of the 'new' generation is way out of line. horrible individuals????

yeah there are the odd few, but its the same in every genereation. get over yourself.

+ its the society we live in now because of who? because of the 'older' people like you. you wana change something - do it. otherwise keep your bitching to yourself

..I do think it's a pity that the headliners/main acts (confirmed or tbc) are largely has-beens. Legends in their day - but with nothing new to offer - Neil Young, Springsteen, Blur, Placebo, CSN, Madness, The Specials .etc.

I know others will totally disagree but it's looking a bit like a top up the pension festival to me (at the Pyramid/ Other Stage end of things). I also think there's an imbalance of American folk/ rock - Neil Young, Springsteen, CSN, Fleet Foxes.

Anyway, the smaller stages will more than make up for it and I know that complaining about the line-up is missing the point - just an observation...

I dont care about the headliners cause the dance village is amazing this year :D

Although i suppose you could said it value for money cause probs well over £50 to see Neil Young & Bruce Springsteen at their own gig and Blur probs aint far off £50 for their Hyde Park show.

yeh I'd like to change something, export all your age group to the isle of wight or somewhere and leave you to fend for yourselves.

Yes it is my generation that is to blame. I am glad you admit that you are a "failed generation". Hopefully we can learn from our mistakes (ie you and you ilk) and start from scratch with the next generation. Unfortunately there is no hope for yours. A life of menial employment and poverty await you.

pardon?

The point is your generation has been failed at every level.

Education standards are terrible, obesity levels are vast and continuing to soar, teenage pregnancies higher than ever before in history, there is an STD epidemic, employment prospects utterly bleak, the gap between rich and poor has never been wider etc etc

No wonder you are the way you are.

I think the internet has a lot to do with increasing levels of moaning.

Evidence has shown that in these technological ages, and with such ease of access on the internet, that people are much less patient, and crave instant satisfaction and answers.

It makes people more demanding. They can get exactly what they want instantly on the internet, so if they don't get exactly what they want in terms of lineup, they can't accept it.

(This makes me sound like a old man and a technophobe, I'm 18 and not!)

I'm sure people are disappointed by the lineup, but they shouldn't be! This year won't be worse than any others. Not everybody can be catered for, and its all dependent on which bands are available.

To anyone who is disappointed by the lineup, I challenge you to find any lineup for any festival ever which would cater for all kinds of festival goer.

if you dont have faith in the 'youth' of today then i feel sorry for you. I am proud of my country and my age group and am very gratefull for the opportunities presented to me. I feel going onto message boards with the purpose of belittling those younger than you and blaming them for aparent problems is immature and sad.

Back to the original topic and not all this deep meaningful stuff.

Headliners are just plain awful. So bad that I just can't be bothered getting 5 nights away from home, with my mates, watching anything from live music to comedy to things that are a mixture of both. To wandering about and simply soaking up the weird and wonderful, to sitting in the stone circles, day and night watching the world drift by. To meeting folks I've never seen before and having nice friendly chat. To stumbling across bands in small tents, the acoustic tent a wee walk to Jazz World.

To sitting at a tent with a candle in the middle of the night drinking a warm can of beer and thinking....if only life was like this all the time and I just stayed here.

And most of all Brothers Pear Cider (festival strength)

and

THE HEADLINER.......Doves

So yeh headliners are shite and there's bugger all else to do when they're on

At the end of the day, if you buy tickets for a festival that doesn't announce the lineup in advance then you have to accept that you may not like the bands that are booked.

If like me you have a wide taste in music and can see past all the Radio 1 / NME hype, not be too (musically) snobbish and love the atmosphere of the festival then you will have a great time! With the hundreds of bands booked, they'd have to try really hard to book none that I like!

But if you like a very specific type of music and don't enjoy the challenge of something unfamiliar or that you don't like then you should buy tickets for a festival such as Bestival who announce the lineup in advance.

For the record, none of the headliners had me jumping up and down (would have loved to see Blur a decade ago, but not really fussed now - though like Albarn's side projects).

However, a few years ago there were a lot of relatively new bands who were obvious headliners (Coldplay, Killers etc, not my cup of tea but obvious headliners) at the moment there's just not a lot of current bands you could see headlining.

They could of course get the usual suspects back, but it's not good to keep repeating the same lineup, and on the way up I'd imagine bands are happy to headline glasto for the first time for little money, but once they are established they probably don't need it any more, whereas Bruce probably wants to push his back catalogue.

I generally have had a wicked time already by the headline slot, and if I don't fancy any of the headliners I head up to the green fields before it gets too busy.

And whilst I'd normally not go and see Bruce even if he was playing for free in the pub down the road, watching him perform Dancing in the dark on the youtube video on the pilton website, whilst the music to my ears still sounds cheesier than a cheddar, brie, camembert and dairylee sandwich on cheesy bread, the atmosphere in the audience looked amazing! Who knows, I might be in the mood for a bit of cheese!

Bit ignorant and immature to be fair. Employment prospects are bleak throughout the world, as 'our generation' has had little or nothing to do with credit borrowing and irresponsible banking we cannot have said to have failed at that. If any generation failed (which none of them have it's all bullshit) it is the older generation and their irresponsible lending and borrowing, 100% morgages for example. Indeed when the crisis does subside our generation will still have another 40 years +/- to find employment.

Your Generation voted for New Labour in the 1997 election so we can hardly be blamed for widening of the gap between rich and poor.

The education one is what gets me though. The students don't set the curriculum, and for what the curriculum is, exam results and levels of pupils going on to further education have never been higher. May I remind that the government has had to introduce a higher tier in the A-levels because too many people were getting As. Absolute Daily Mail, Conservative, the youth is the cause of all our problems bullshit that Russy.

no no no you are missing my point completey. You are not responsible for the failure of your generation, of course not. I totally accept that it is the fault of others that your generation is in the state it is.

But my point is that your generation IS is in a state, and as such is a generation of poorly educated, in poor health wasters with very poor prospects. It is the most pitiful generation in decades. It is not your fault. But you are an inferior generation.

The result of years of governmental mismanagement. An entire generation is, alas, a complete waste of resources.
