Time for some Black Metal at Glasto?

Full-on mainstream pop (e.g. Girls Aloud, Spice Girls) is not represented.

The cheesier end of the dance music spectrum is not really represented. (See previous Donk post)

MOR Simon Cowell fodder (Boyzone, Westlife) is not represented.

Gangsta hip hop, the stuff that celebrates guns'n'bitches would not be welcome.

Classical music gets a polite nod and nobody pays attention.

... we're reaching the boundaries of my knowledge of musical styles.

Rock *is* represented - the fuzzy boundary where it gets too harsh for Glastonbury is not clear for me. But to me The Who are rock; Robert Plant is rock. Metal is a few steps along the scale in a certain direction, and yeah, it crosses a line that would change Glastonbury's atmosphere.

I am all too happy that terrible genre of music is banned from Glastonbury. Give me anything of that rubbish (with the exception of Swing and Donk which I link all in the unholy trinity of music).

EDIT:

And Jens can't you make a thread without the mammoth collection of videos slowing the page nicely down. Use words to describe yourself man.

I think the idea of; Metallica, Slipknot, Satyricon, Rage Against The machine and such bands fans are loud fat mindless long heaired heavy rockers with bad personal hygine got outdated for more than 15 years ago..

my experience of dance at glastonbury definitely wasnt chilled out. i dont like dance, so i will avoid it. if harder music like metal was added to a section of the site, then people could similarly avoid that.

That's not what I meant at all. I've spent many a happy hour in the company of the rock/metal heads at Edward's No. 8 in Birmingham and they're lovely people the lot of them.

No, the problem is not with the people but with the emotional response the music is *designed* to trigger. Starting at the extreme, Black Metal is *supposed* to make you feel angry, frightened, alienated, hate filled (the opening voiceover for that video confirms this!).

Slipknot, I'd say much the same. It's aggressive, nihilistic music, by design. This is the band that used to open a jar containing a rotting bird corpse and have a big sniff before going on stage, just to put themselves in the demented ill frame of mind for the show. If their show put you in the smily happy mood that Glastonbury's all about, it wouldn't be working how the musicians intended.

Metallica, well, I've never really understood them. So we'll leave them to one side.

Rage, I think would actually fit in quite well at Glasto, partly because of their politics, and partly because I think they're more indie-rock than metal.

What happened? The music isn't necessarilry chilled out but it suits a relaxed festival. If harder music like metal came on to the site, then it would in turn attract a more 'harder music' fan, soon there will be mosh pits Billy Bragg and before you know you'll find a bunch of pro-metal, indie kids launching your tent atop a fire.

I'm all up for some 'hard rock' maybe even a few industrial bands..

But.

Black metal does seem a bit over the top, I do understand that Glastonbury is full of amazing, strange types of music. which I do enjoy don't get me wrong..

But black metal would be a bit of a.. strange atmosphere.. i mean chilling out drinking some cider.. then a black metal band comes on..

Does no one think that'd be, a tad freaky.. after a few smokes and cider, i know for a fact that'd scare the sh** out of me..

This one is also a interesting documentary. It`s about Varg Vikernes (""the most notorious metal musician of all time".") who is still in jail for murder and arson.

I could picture NIN, Deftones, The Mars Volta, Rage Against The Machine, Faith No More and Foo Fighters playing Glasto. Maybe even Metallica?

And another one, maybe the best one.. At least the most serious one when it commes to understanding the genre.

Interesting documentary on Norwegian Black Metal. Featuring Darkthrone, Satyricon, Mayhem, Emperor and Dimmu Borgir. Originally broadcasted on Norwegian television in 2003.

Use this link to view all four parts.
